Recital at Christian Church. Driven inland over the coast range of m ountains by the high winds and rain ’’storms of S atu r day a large Bittern or “ T hunder- pum per" alighted near John D ur h am 's bam by the side of a little pond Sunday. Mr. T herm au C a n non of Koseburg, w ho with his wife, are guests of Mr. and Mrs. D ur ham , was supplied with a shot gun and he shot the bird, which Mr. Durham will have mounted. These birds frequent the m arshy coast country atid belong to the crane family, having long legs and ueck, but are not so large as a crane and are a m uch prettier bird. By partially burying their long bill in the m ud they m ake a noise sim ilar to distant thunder or that of a m ountain pheasant drum m ing on a log, hence are commonly called 1 ‘T hunder-pum pers. ’ ’ A very entertaining m usical and literary recital was giveu at the Christian church Friday evening by local people, every num ber be ing well rendered and greatly en joyed by the good sized audience.
