T he writer in m aking the usual rounds of the town T hursday could but note ou this springlike day the m any evidences of our even, mild and delightful climate as com pared with th at of the east and middle west just now. In many dooryards were to be seen roses, pansies, daisies, sweet williams, and chrysanthem um s in full bloom in the open air. At several places we noticed nice l>eds of fresh green lettuce, onions and radishes grow ing in the gardens, while a few of our citizens were found plauting early garden and flower bulbs. Hut the incident to most impress us and which m akes all of the fantastic posy, exultation and felicitating of our esteemed con temporary, “ Nobody’s M agazine,” when exploiting Oregon weather and superb| clim atic conditions, sink into utter insignificance, was a sight viewed from the river bridge on Main street, the am us ing spectacle of a num ber of happy school lads bearfoot enjoy ing themselves by wading and splashing in the placid waters of the I'pper W illam m ette river, and this on the third day of December! Here we could but picture in our mind the extrem es of an ( ircgou and eastern w inter—here the school boys barefooted, w ading and splashing in the limpid streams; there the school boys, fur- clad, skating and sleighing ou the streams and ponds. T hink this over, ye sttow bound, blizzard beaten, frost bitten inhabitant of the far east and m iddle west, and then resolve to come to Oregon. T he O regonian, while a n ta g onistic to the tenijierauce move m ent in this state— at least from a m onetary standpoint, once in a while gives aw ay its true moral sentim ent ou the question, a t least when it comes close home to it as it did last week when a prom inent attorney while in a drunken frenzy shot to death a brother attorney, thus placing another blot on the fair record of Portland, regarding w hich the O regonian says editori ally. “ Of course, there will be the defense of irresponsibility— probably through alcoholism. Hut alcoholism is no excuse. It is itself an offense. It is high tim e juries should teach th a t men c a n ’t use liquor for stim ulation to m u r der, and escape th e penalty. O f fensive a spectacle as the gallows is this com m unity needs it still, and so does m any a n o th e r."
