The petition was never present ed, nor action taken, owing to the fact that the farmers were in the midst of seeding; but as Mr. Goodenow seems to crave an in vestigation, the signers are dis posed to meet with the county court the first Wednesday iu Jan u ary. At a meeting held Saturday it was so decided. The people here are a unit for good roads, but object to a rock crusher running at the expense of the taxpayers in order to keep one or two teams busy hauling rock on the road, or if it is necessary to keep one team hauling water for the engine when the engine sits on the bank of a clear stream. What is wanted is that the crusher lie run to its full capacity at all times. If neces sary let the county buy more to distribute the rock or let it out by coutract. W. W . J a c k s o n . PORTLAND BANK ROBBERY ROOSEVELT OPENS APPLE FAIR Portland, Dec. 7.— The East Side bank, located at the corner of East YVashington street and Grand avenue, was held up and robbed at ft o ’clock tonight by three un masked men. It is understood they secured about $16,500. The president of the bank, Henry II. Newhall, and son Roger Newliall, were just closing the day’s business when two men armed with revolvers entered. President Newhall and son were ordered Afe hold up their hands, and while thus under cover of the robbers’ revolver, one man crawled through the teller’s window and passed out gold and currency and silver to his confederates and then crawled back into the foyer through the window. The three men made their escape before an alarm could be sounded. From the neatness of the job done, and the expeditious way in which the robbers made their escape, the police surmise they must have had other assistance or had a cache somewhere in the vicinity of the hank. Spray & Co, buys veal, chick ens, eggs, etc. Spokane, Dec. 7.— Pandemon ium broke loose at 10:30 this morning, Spokane time, when President Roosevelt pressed the electric button at YVashington that flashed the signal of the opeuiug of the first great apple show in this city. For five minutes all the noise that could be made with whistles, bells and human lungs reigned over Spokane, it is pro posed to make the great show an annual festival. President Louis W. Hill, of the apple show, and who is also presi dent of the Great Northern rail road, delivered the principal ad dress. fie dwelt upoti the interest that was being taken in fruit farm ing. Such fairs and exhibitions stimulate the principles of culture and the influence is far reaching, he said. Setting out 3 0 ,000 Trees. L. B.
