T he district convention of the Rebekah order em bracing the lodges at l.orane, Yoncalla, Drain and Cottage Grove, was held ?* th is place S aturday. T here was about thirty delegates in attend ance representing the outside o r ders of the district, and the occas ion was honored with a visit from M is . Sm ith o f G rants I’ass, 1‘resi dent Oregon Rebekah Assembly. An afternoon and evening session was held, closing with a big in itia tion and banquet in the evening. It was declared a very interesting and pleasant convention by all of th e delegates. A Popular Entertainer Coming. There was som ething doing on the part of the Modern Woodmen of America order in their lodge room in this city M onday evening, the occasion being a visit from District Deputy Pixley, of E ugene. There was a large attendance on the part of the memliersliip in cluding the wives of the W ood men, and a num ber of invited guests. A fter a splendid address on fraternal insurance and the wonderful growth and stren g th of the M. W. A. by Deputy Pixley, came a social hour and a jolly good tim e ensued, concluding with a sum ptuous supper, consisting of fresli oyster stew, ham sandw iches, pickles, bread, butter and coffee. Dr. Kiine served a s .c h e f a n d h e proved fully equal to the occasion, with Mrs. Kim e and several other ladies as advisory assistants. T he M. W . A. now proudly lioasts of a total memliersliip of over one m illion, their reserve fund is enormous and the m em bership is only subjected to from eight to ten assessments a year. T he Cottage Grove cam p is nearly two hundred strong and atilt growing. G ertrude Johnson O 'F ling, a dram atic reader of rare ability, will give one of her popular liter ary entertainm ents at the Christian church W ednesday evening Oct. 28th. She comes very highly recommended by oratory critics. Prices will be announced later. Miss O ’F lin g possesses quite re m arkable dram atic power, which she has developed by system m atic and thorough work as a student. She never fails to please an audience. OREGON APPLES BEING SHIPPED TO NEW YORK T h e Hood River Apple G row ers’ Union has sold thirty carloads of the fine Spitzenlierg apples grown in th a t section of Oregon, the p u r chaser being S teinhart & Kelly C om pany, of New York city who secured eighty carloads of New- tow ns from the sam e organization a few weeks ago. T h e union has sixty carloads of apples yet unsold but it is expected th a t the fruit will lie disposed of liefore m any days. T he w inter apple picking has begun and a crop of extra quality apples is reported so far. T h e first sale of Mosier (O re g o n ) apples this year took place W ednesday, Oct. 7, when the Mo sier Fruitgrow ers' Association sold 10,000 boxes to the Davidson F ruit Com pany of Hood river. T he varieties disposed of were the Spit- zenbergs, Baldwins and Red Cheeks and are said to lie of the finest quality. T he association still has about J0,000 boxes of apples to dispose of including its Yellow Newtowns w hich last year were claim ed to have averaged the highest in price of any apples of this variety sold in the northwest. Reports received from buyers who h av e exam ined the crop at Mosier this year are to the effect that it is the finest on the average th a t they have seen ou the coast. T he prices received for the apples are stated to be very satisfactory to th e association and work of picking and packing the fruit for shipm ent was commenced at once. — Pacific Homestead.
