T h e building of a fine, large, modern fruit drier and fruit (lack ing house in Cottage Grove this season h as had the effect to g rea t ly stim ulate the fruit business hereabouts, as well as the splendid success attain ed in the business by Dr. Scarbrough, of Creswell, the pioneer orchardist of this section of the county. H e has fully dem onstrated the fact th at south L ane is a par-excellent fruit growing district and th at there is big money in fruit grow ing when handled in an intelligent, practical and sys- tem m atic m anner. T h e statem ent m ade in our paper last T uesday regarding the prune drying operations of I'red W right on the T ate farm an d in nearby orchards should have been credited to Dr. L. I). Scarbrough instead of Mr. W right. T he latter has purchased the T ate farm hut had nothing to do with the fruit product on the place this year, nor in the other orchards of th at com m unity. TWO BIG DRIVES BOOTH-KELLY CO. T he rise in the W illam ette and M cKenzie rivers caused the Booth- Kelly C o.’s loggers to get busy. T he M cKenzie raised thirty-six inches an d sqnt the ten million feet of logs between Seavey’s ferry and the Coburg boom shooting into th e boom an d the logging crews were worked n ig h t and day with the result th a t no logs were lost. T heir W illam ette drive of eight million feet lying between the m outh of Fall ereek an d Spring- field are m oving into the boom. T h is will furnish logs sufficient to keep the C oburg a n d Spring- field mills ru u u in g until spring. As soon as the C alifornia freight rate was settled the Booth-Kelly com pauy started up their Saginaw mill and are ru u u iu g a fun day crew at each of their three mills. T H E LO G G IN G R O A D . T he new logging road which e x tends five and a h alf miles up into the tim ber from W endling is all com pleted. T heir new logging engine is here an d in operation. Mr. D unbar, the expert who came out with the engine from Baldwin works in Philadelphia, returned home yesterday. T h e Booth-Kelly Co., have an S. P. engine hired, and the two are now busy b allast ing the road. T H E W E N D I.IN G Mil,!,. T h e W endling mill is being thoroughly overhauled and m any new im provem ents are being put in. George H . Kelly tells the Register th a t if T a ft is elected and business continues to improve they expect to start the W endling mill again.
