REFLECTION " ilT the daw n of the New Year perhaps the first thought to cross *** the portals of the hum an mind was the death of the Old Yenr. W ith the m ost of us we m ight sa.v th a t It w as only a fleeting thought, for the old had liarely passed into eternity when the new w as born and instantly the shriek of the steam whistle and th s mer ry chimes of bells proclaimed the glad tidings to all the land. But let ua s to p ; let us m editate: let us collect our thoughts anil give up one m om ent of odr valuable time to reflection. The Old year has served us well, but it Is passed and gone never again to re turn, tho the deeds of valor and the mistakes of life will linger long after its demise, and we find in looking over the calander that the shades of time has added another yenr to our decling age. In the m orning of the new year is the time for sane und sober re flection. If you have erred in the past, profit by your experience and avoid a re-occurrence of the cause. If you have profited exercise the same good Judgment t lint tirought you such good results. Every year sees many changes. Men and m atrons rise and fall, fortunes accumulate and vnnisli und the commerce of the world shifts from point to point. In order to appreciate the conditions and changes in tile commercial world, let ns revert to the d istan t past. To the Persians and I'lnenlclans com m cne w as looked upon as a school of lies. To the Greeks and Koinans Its members were looked upon ns a pack of thelves and others saw no hope for _>hem beyond the grave. Coming up to the l*th find lath centuries, if we do not en counter these errors, there arc others of less moment, showing there by th a t Intellects, however lofty they may be. are not—to say the least—Infalable. Here in our m idst there nre countless! numbers w ho have erred within the past year, but this space has l>cen purchased by private parties for a period of one year and from this day on shall he de voted to the good and welfare of the cltiw ns in this community and the writer of these few lines sincerely hopes and tru sts th a t In the future the reader will turn to this space and receive the benefit of the knowledge herein contained, which will serve as m aster and guide to your investments and personal happiness from this hour on. In the next Issue of the lender will appear the first of a series of advice, together with the name of the party offering It for the year 190». Y onrsfora Prosjierotis and Happy New Year. N. B. It seems that investors and man ufacturers are beginning to realize the splendid opportunities and ad vantages afforded by Cottage Grove for the establishment of various manutseturing enterprises herein, and we believe the time is near at hand when Cottage Grove will be come quite an important manufact uring city. With the coming of the match factory’ and laundry we have valuable additions to our sash and door factory, big saw-mil ling plant, flour mill and brick yard enterprises, and the next thing you know, Cottage Grove’s home pay roll will be no small con sideration. This is what we want, and every citizen of the town should resolve himself into a com mittee of one to encourage every enterprise of this nature that conies along. As we understand it, Jas. E. Fox formerly connected with the sash and door factory in this city, but for tho past year or more connected with the Dorena Lumber Company, as superintendent of their planing mills and dry kiln, is the man now directing bis capital and efforts in the establishment of a match fac tory in this city. We are informed that the laundry building in tho Stauffer addition has been leased for this purpose and that Mr, Fox will soon establish a modem patch factory plant therein. He should receive every possible encourage ment in his enterprise. Begin the New Year Right * Lumbermen and Miners * PEARCE BROS.
