Stensland, president of Ilia wrecked Chicago state bunk, who waa recently arrested at Tangier, Morocco, found no asylum lu that country de- ■plte the lack of an extradition treaty. His case Is similar to that o f Bill Tweed, one time head o f Tammany Hall, New York. When Boss Tweed was brought back from Spain no ex tradition treaty existed, but an American war ship t o u c h e d th e re , and Tweed, who had been harassed, agreed to go home on It. The closing of the Milwaukee Avenue S t a t e bank on Aug. U last was follow ed by a panic among the 22,- 000 depositors. The bank was a Stensland fami ly affair, aud its PAUL O. KTENKLAND. patrons w ere small business men and poor working people. Upon tbe closing of tbe Institution the authorities discovered that Steus- luud had tied. Cashier tiering, arrest ed In Chicago after lie had disappear ed for three days, placed the blame on Stenslund. On Aug. 10 prank Kowal ski, paying teller, committed suicide by shooting because he could not en dure the suspicions cast upon him by bis friends. Several ruined depositors were driven to commit suicide. Memoranda left by Stensland show ed. It is alleged, that he took $1,033,- 000 from the bank, of which half was cash stolen within a month of the bank's collapse. President Stensland is a Norwegian, lie went to Chicago in 1S71. H e for merly conduct is 1 a private bank. In 1 X 01 be organized the state bank which was looted. Stensland was a World’s fair director and u leader among the foreign element of Chicago.
