Cottage Grove undoubtedly lont conslderablo trade hmt winter by the condition of Wall street, but the council and the town people are going to see the road in good con dition before another winter. Tho truste are mill getting it hot and heavy on all sidox. The cases against tho Standard Oil are being vigorously pushed on all sides and there is no diKpoHition to let up, from the testimony and prof-ecutiin. Chief Justice IJrew;r of the II. j, Supremo court ij quoted as saying: "I confidently believe Roosevelt will not again bo a candidate for president, but I think Roosevelt is- pushing forward Taft ns hia bucccs Bor." Three young women were drowned in the Coos river near Al leghaney Saturday while bathing. One of the girl who was uuable to swim got iuto deep water and the othar two attempted to save her but were drowned in the attempt. Residents along tho south side of Wall ftreet ate only waiting for tho city engineers to ftx tuo walk line to put tueir fenccB and walks out of tho street line on the ground re cently vacated by the city. They all propose to fix up their grounds and improve the looks of the street. A good lecture course will come to the Grove this winter, and the Choral Society will soon begin to practice, so some good music from home talent will be had in addition to the lecture course. Cottage Grove should be able to huvo such things and is going to this winter. The Presbyterian Church is giv. ing its pastor, Rev. Grace a months vabation this month, in order that he may rest aud enjoy himself. He will camp with his family out be yond the end of the OAS V, line. During his absence there will uot be any preaching except as some supplies are present. Nineteen doctors out of 44 appli cants for state licenses is the result of the examination by the State Hoard of Medical examiners July 1 Oth and lith. Tho restrictions imposed by Jsuch examinations are wise ones and even then men are admitted to the practice of medicine who are uot at all fitted for their work. Two boya escaped from the Ore gon Reform school and before thoy were captured, started a career of crime which would have brought them soon to commit murder had they not been arrested. Their re form school life has evidently not Improved them, and whatever pun ishments the prison authorities may inflict upon them will only tend to make them even worse criminals when they are turned loose to prey upon the people. Urown, who in litigation over water rights held up the Gold Coin mi tie 11' ar Duikce for a lull year in enforced idleness, succeeded in ty ing up all operation;! for a longer period lust week when tho supreme court at Salem reversed the de cision of Judgo White of tho cir cuit court of Hiker, and Judge Mooro handed down an injunction perpetually icstraiuing the G"ld Coin Mining Company from fur ther operations of the quart, mi!! until arrangements are made to prevent injury to the plaintiff's ir rigating ditches and to tlio water used by him. The decisinu is somewhat ironi cal at this time for having com pleted sucH arrangements as would prevent damago to Drown through his irrigating ditches, owners re opened tho Cold Coin which ran two days and was burned to the ground, a total loss as tho result of a fire of mysterious origin. Tho litigation was commenced by Brown after the mill had been oper ated less than a week. Tlio ow ners were compelled to sit idle for al most a year, but managed by mak ing a new ditch line with three el 11 111 dams in t-uch a way that the water was purified before going in to the Hrown ditches. No sooner had this boon done than the mill was burned, tho fire coming at a time when its origin was simply inexplicable. According to Judge Mooro's de cision the ueiendants m the case must pay tho costs and disburse ments for themselves and the plaintiffs in both cases. Mining Record. T1IK KND OP TUP.
