ishments the prison authorities may
inflict upon them will only tend to
make them even worse criminals
when they are turned loose to prey
upon the people.

The method pursued in laying
the crushed rock is as iollows: The
titst layer consists of rock screened

to four inches. A second layer

inches deep is rolled to two inches:
Subsequently a last Hyer of
"screening" is laid to fill all crev
ices in the rock, surface sprinkled
with water and rolled effectively
with a lo-toti staam roller.

vey. Simples, tho poorest that could
be found in the confer ot the placer
field, were sent, and his assay has
just been received showing that the
dirt runs 5,1 So to the ton m gold,
00 per cent of magnetic iron and 5-t
per cent of hematite, making these
among the richest placer mines in
the country. The sample also car
ries platinum, on which Mr. Day
made no report.
