Ailvurtlalng ruton mni'n known upon hpollentlaiit Friday, Jui.v 5, 1901. iiJIITJSH AGOJtnSSIOX. Geo. M. Miller, the well know Lane county nttomej, tnndc alittle bit'of history on his own account in Alaska the other day when he pulled down the British flag which was flaunting over the St.irs and Striocs in an American town. The net was characteristic of the man Mr. Miller is a quiet unassuming gentleman, having little to say and does not require much time to say it in. He acts rather than talks He is a gentleman of high moral worth, and no one will deny his patriotism. He did that which every true and patriotic American citizen should do under likecircum stances. From the beginning of our colonial history up to the out break of the Spanish-American war there is no place in the records of international controversy where Great Britian has not shown the liosr. and in nearly every instance she has "bested" the United Statesin settlement. It is true the Ameri can government is justified in feel ing kindly toward Great Britian, when we review her attitude toward the United States, at the beginning of the strife with Spain But in-this there is little ground for the, burst of enthusiasm that fol ' lowed the seemingly, good act of Great Britian and which we are prone to smother at this late day. Great Britian was looking after her own interests at that time and lay ing the ground for at least a neu tral.staud on the part of the United States when she saw fit to place her heel upon the Boers. Deep down in the heart of the American people there is a sympathetic- cord which, swells and vibrates not par ticufaffy for the Boers, nor in an tagonism 'to Great Britian, but be cause of our love for the principles for which the Boers are wasting their life blood. Again let us say that with the exception of the Spanish-American war incident in no place in the history of our great country, made great by the patriotism of a liberty loving people, do we find an instance where Great Britian has not been aggres sive to us. In. Alaska particularly, has Great Britian encroached upon American rights. And if the flag incident has been reported aright, it was an oportune moment for a loyal Ameri can to cut the British ensigu down In, the language of our German friend: "We like pork but d a hog." THIS CELEBRATION. How Cottage Grove Observed The Day A. Big Crowd A Good Time, The celebration of Independence day in Cottage Grove was decidedly a success in every respect. Al though the. crowd was not so large as usual there was none the less demonstration. Tlte.-parade started promptly at 10:30 headed by the grand marshal, followed by the Pleasant Hill baud, Goddess car, Liberty car, girls on bicycles representing 13 original states, hose companies and floats. The program at the grounds was well rendered and appreciated. The afternoon was devoted to sports and was a decided success. The Polymorphian parade .was excellent. SECOND PAYMKNT. The Bohemia Gold Mining Co., under the management of Geo. W, Lloyd, has this week made the sec ond payment on the Gold Cross and Bohemia Girl claims, recently purchased from Attorney J. K. 1? Tt . oung. ine company nas a crew engaged in development work, and a depth of 1S0 feet has already been gained. The ore is free milling and gives returns of $12 and $14 to the ton.
