COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL | DECEMBER 2, 2021 | 3A History and art entwine in ACE class When the students of Academy for Character Education (ACE) began their 2021-22 school year, there was a new teacher waiting for them. Car- men Dowell — founder of Creative Chaos in Cottage Grove and known for her dedication to the Special Olympics athletes of Cot- tage Grove and Creswell area — can now add “art teacher” to her many hats. “I really didn’t know much about ACE,” said Dowell. “The more I learn about the core values of the school and how they operate, I am very happy to be here.” The school employs a unique style of teaching described as very “hands- on” and provides a lot of responsibilities to the stu- dents. “For example, Nov. 7 began our three weeks of learning about Japan and Korea,” said Dowell. “In art class the first week, we discussed what we will be creating and the history behind it, then draw out our plan. The next week we begin to execute the creation, and the final week we do final finish- ings.” The past few weeks, Dowell’s class has focused on Japanese stick pup- pets. The stick puppets, also known as head dolls, consist of cats, jesters and kings. “Ichiron is the name of a shop owned by Horio Ichirozaemon, who came up with these clay head puppets,” said Dowell. “They would perform puppet shows for royalty. Today the shop is in its fifth generation. There are stories that these dolls were believed to help pro- tect small children from crying at night and were a popular gift to new par- ents.” Dowell said her stu- dents are loving process COURTESY PHOTOS Students at ACE work on Japanese clay head puppets and learn a bit of art history from another corner of the world. of creating art and learn- ing the story of the proj- ect. “I love it too, as I am Boy Scout Christmas trees on sale learning so much about a past history of art that I never knew existed,” she said.
