2A | DECEMBER 2, 2021 | COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL On The Record City Recorder retirement POLICE LOG Nov. 22 • During patrol, an of- ficer observed a juvenile smoking a vape pen in the area of North 8th Street and Whiteaker Avenue. When asked why they was smoking and where they had got it from, the juvenile stated they did not know and shrugged his shoul- ders. The officer seized the vape and later threw it in the trash as instructed to by evidence/property tech- nician due to the liquid in- side of the vape. Nov. 23 • A 5th grade Bohemia Elementary Student was cited for Minor in Posses- sion of Tobacco for pos- sessing a vape pen. An officer was notified by school staff and responded to address the student and confiscate the vape pen. The student went home with their mother for the day after the student was counseled by the officer and school staff. The vape pen was lodged as evidence appropriately. Nov. 24 • An individual report- ed theft from Riverside Church, stating a tool shed was broken into and sever- al garden tools were taken. This was said to have taken place sometime between Nov. 19 and Nov. 24. It was stated that one back pack blower and one Stihl string trimmer/Kombi power head were taken from the shed. • Cottage Grove Police responded to Jefferson Park Apartments in regard to a mental health call for service. The complainant advised that his neighbor was screaming and threat- ening bodily harm towards other tenants in the apart- ment complex. Upon po- lice arrival and contact, the subject was found to be unable to provide basic care for herself and provid- ed statements of causing harm to others by “killing her neighbors” and then responding CGPD offi- cers with a “giant god gun”. The subject appeared to be having an extreme manic episode and she said she refused to take her medi- cation for. Ultimately, the subject was placed into custody without incident or injury by CGPD offi- cers under a non-criminal mental hold and directly transported to the Univer- sity District Hospital in Eugene for a mental health evaluation. • While on uniformed patrol, a CGPD officer contacted an individual in Coiner Park sleeping un- der the gazebo at the park and was found to have a limited extradition war- rant out of Eugene Munic- ipal Court. The individual stated that he had been jumped in Eugene and as- saulted at a transient camp and remembered some type of interaction with EPD, but said that he did not remember all the de- tails as the assault occurred a while ago. The warrant was confirmed and the individual was issued a ci- tation to appear at Eugene Municipal Court. Nov. 25 • Criminal mischief was reported on the 1600 block of Grover Avenue after a complainant noticed that her vehicle’s front wind- shield had been broken sometime during the night. A rock was found on the driveway next to the vehi- cle, which appeared to be the object which struck the windshield. No other vehi- cles in the neighborhood seemed to be damaged. Nov. 26 • An individual was re- ported to have committed Burglary in the Second De- gree and Theft in the First Degree when he entered in to the 76 gas station on East Main Street after regu- lar business hours with the intent to remove cash and tobacco products valued at more than $1,000. • An individual report- ed her purse stolen from Walmart after leaving it in a cart she had been using just minutes prior. Nov. 27 • An officer contact- ed a resident on the 700 block of Benjamin Avenue regarding his tire being “slashed”. The individual stated he had a company come out to his residence and replace the tire due to it being flat. The company advised the tire had been punctured by a sharp ob- ject causing the tire to de- flate. The officer observed the vehicle’s tire to be flat with a hole on the side of it. • Officers responded to the parking lot of the Cot- tage Grove Library located at 700 E. Gibbs for a report of an assault. An individu- al stated he located his sto- len backpack in a vehicle belonging to a female who he stated assaulted him while he was attempting to retrieve his backpack. An officer observed injuries on the complainant’s neck consistent with a physical altercation. A different in- dividual advised officers he had been on his cell phone and was approached by the female, who was demand- ing to use his phone. After refusing, the vehicle owner became enraged and raised a wooden dowel above her head in a manner suggest- ing she was going to strike the phone owner with it. The male engaged in a brief struggle with the fe- male over the dowel and in the process the female bit the phone owner on the left middle finger, causing two bleeding lacerations. The female was ultimately arrested and lodged at the Lane County Jail. DEATH NOTICES Ross – Craig Nigel Ross, 72, of Eugene died No- vember 18, 2021. Arrangements by Sunset Hills Funeral Home Cre- matorium and Cemetery in Eugene. Th eodore “Ted” Johnson October 18, 2021 Th eodore “Ted” Johnson, 67 of Cottage Grove passed away October 18, 2021. Ted was born in Portland, Oregon to parents David and Elsie (Kalmen) John- son. Aft er graduating from Mil- waukie High School in 1972, he attended Portland State Universi- ty, where he received his bachelor of arts degree in 1976. Ted was a wildland fi refi ghter and worked for the US Forest Service for over 30 years. He loved being out in nature hiking, camping, and ski- ing, and also enjoyed gourmet cooking, reading, music, art and architecture, and spending time with his family and dog. He mar- ried Susan Fredericks in 1989, and while remaining friends, they divorced in 2009. Ted is sur- vived by his son Erik Johnson of Cottage Grove; his brother Mar- tin Johnson of San Anselmo, Cal- ifornia; and sister Dorothea Lee of Portland, Oregon. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of fl owers, donations can be made to the McKenzie River Trust. Arrangements by Smith- Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel in Cottage Grove, Oregon. The Cottage Grove City Recorder Trudy Borrevik will be retiring at the end of December. In order to aid in the smooth transition, the re- cruitment of a new city re- corder has been completed with the selection of Mindy Roberts to fill the role. Roberts has been with the city for eight years and cur- rently serves as the utility clerk in the Finance Depart- ment. During December, Rob- erts will receive training on the city recorder functions and will continue helping staff in finance with the util- ity functions. Roberts will take over complete function as city re- corder on Jan. 1, 2022. Karen T. Winters 1949 - 2021 Karen T. Winters, 72, of Cottage Grove, OR died peace- fully November 23, 2021, aft er a brief battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her family and close friends. Karen was born on April 9th, 1949, in Eugene, OR to Ivan and June Hoyer. She was raised in Cot- tage Grove and graduated from Cottage Grove High School in 1967. She met her husband James Winters while in college. Th ey were married in Ha- zelton, PA on March 2, 1968, and recently celebrated their 53rd anniversary. Aft er a brief period while Jim was in the Navy, Karen and Jim returned to Cottage Grove in 1969. Early in her career Karen worked for Garber’s Nursing Home in Eugene as a book- keeper. Not long into her book- keeping career she joined the family business aptly named Hoyer Accounting, also locat- ed in Cottage Grove. Eventu- ally she purchased the business from her parents and operated the fi rm until recent health is- sues precipitated a long-await- ed retirement. Over the years Karen was very active with numerous or- ganizations including Family Relief Nursery, Rotary Club of Cottage Grove Oregon, Down- town Cottage Grove (Th e Cottage Grove Main Street Program and Economic and Business Improvement Dis- trict), Oregon Society of Tax Consultants, Our Lady of Per- petual Help Catholic Church, Cottage Grove Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Ore- gon State Board of Tax Prac- titioners; a position she was appointed to by the Governor. During her life, Karen had many interests, but loved noth- ing more than her Oregon Ducks. She also enjoyed camp- ing and traveling to new places. Karen and her husband, Jim, had just recently returned from a trip to Mexico. She had a love for her Bichon Friese, and her nights spent with friends and family. Karen T. Winters is survived by her husband of 53 years, James Winters, two daughters Charlene (Jeff ) Williams and Michele Knee and four grand- children Brittany, James, Jere- my, and Corey. She will be known best for having the biggest smile and the most wonderful hugs. She was a kind and gentle soul. Memorial Contributions can be made to St. Jude Chil- dren’s Hospital at stjude.org. A Funeral Mass was held, November 30, 2021, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catho- lic Church in Cottage Grove. A private interment will occur at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, OR. Cornelison Economic and Business Improvement District notices sent out Assessment notices were mailed Nov. 12 to property and business owners lo- cated in the Economic and Business Improvement Dis- trict. On Dec. 13, 2021, a public hearing will be held by the Cottage Grove City Council at 7 p.m. for the ordinance extending the district for an additional five years. Faith was born February 15, 1932 in Downey, California to parents Fred and Maude (Nicholes) Pearce. Faith worked as a legal secretary and as a hospital staff coordinator. Her interests included nee- dlepoint, cooking, gardening, writing, and church work. Faith loved small animals. She mar- ried Ray Smith May 7, 1988, in Cottage Grove, and he passed November 1, 1998. Faith is sur- vived by son Merrill Copper- fi eld of Eureka Springs, AR; son Sheldon Glass of Escondido, CA; daughter Carolyn Glass of Van- couver, WA; and 3 grandchil- dren. She is preceded in death by her husband Ray, and son Mark Glass. A funeral will be held Saturday, December 4, 2021 at 1:00 PM at Th e Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Cottage Grove. Cornelison passed away on September 11th, 2021. Sandee (Sandra, AKA: Sam) fought a brave and courageous battle with cancer for several years. Her strength was noth- ing other than an inspiration to all that knew her. Her tenacious attitude and fear of nothing, gave her the nickname of “Sassy Sandee” among her friends and loved ones. Sandee was born in L.A. County – proceeded in death by her parents Murray and Jan- et Cowan. She had two children, Ste- phen G. LaDam and Shannon L. Wilson. As well as two step children Greg Cornelison and Tracy Cornelison Munchiando. Sandee had 6 Grandchildren, 4 Step Grandchildren and 2 Great Grandchildren. She was raised in Arcadia with her twin sisters, Marjo- rie Lake and Patricia Migliaro, where she attended school up until High School graduation. She attended college at La Sierra University. Aft er raising her two chil- dren, in So. Calif., she made the big move with her husband Alan R. Cornelison to Cot- Sandee’s love of horses and all animals began at an early age which most certain- ly passed onto to her family & friends. She began showing horses in 1970 and was incredibly brave and sincerely loved her passion of the equestrian lifestyle. As a family, we look back at all of the amazing things Sand- ee did in life. By her husband’s side, she would do long haul truck runs with Alan, along with their parrot Stanly. To- gether they would ride dirt bikes and camp with friends! She was daring on her own bike to put mildly. Th ey repelled in caverns, travelled on very unexpected road trips, had a blast and experienced amaz- ing memories. She was coura- geous, brave, daring and before her illness took over, she had a fun and amazing life making so many memories with her hus- band Alan. Upon mov- ing to Cottage Grove, Or. She met so many wonderful and loving friends from her King- dom Hall. Her love for Jehovah was unwaver- ing. Even on her worst days she always read her bible and was an active participant in meetings. As she made many friends in Cottage Grove, we all know she loved her community and was so hap- py to be a part of it. Sandee always was an amaz- ing decorator of her home, her love of plants and wildlife made a home feel complete and beau- tiful. She was incredible with her love of painting, needle- point, any type of artistry. A private memorial was held by her local Kingdom Hall, and her family is forever grateful for their love and support through such a diffi cult time. Sandee will be forever missed by all that knew and loved her. Regardless of any circumstance she always supported those that she loved. Never held her opinion which is what we loved most about her. Her strength during her bat- tle with cancer will stay will all that loved her. She was incred- ible and as a family we are so happy her last years were spent in the beautiful town of Cottage Grove.
