COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL | MARCH 25, 2021 | 3A Lane Community College approves tuitions rates for 2021-22 The Lane Community College Board of Edu- cation approved tuition rates for the 2021-22 ac- ademic year at its March 17 meeting, and prepared for an emergency fee in the event of insufficient state funding. This year, resident stu- dents are paying $126 per credit hour. That includes $121 in tuition plus a $5 emergency fee that was instituted last summer due to the eco- nomic impact of the pan- demic. That $5 fee is set to be retired at the end of this academic year. Next year, students will continue to pay $126 per credit hour, but for tui- tion only, provided that the state funds Oregon’s 17 community colleges at $640.9 million or better in the 2021-23 bi-enni- um. If state funding falls below that level, then LCC will have to add an- other emergency fee. The board approved a $10 fee, contingent upon state funding. Lane hopes to use the Higher Education Emer- gency Relief Fund II to fully offset further eco- nomic impact wrought by the continuing pan- demic, and avoid adding any additional fees to student costs. The new academic year begins June 21. Public virtual presentation will focus on transitional shelter for homeless Tod Schneider, Execu- tive Director of Commu- nity Supported Shelters (CSS), will explain how his organization is ad- dressing the homeless is- sue at noon on Thursday, April 15 via Zoom. Schneider’s career includes 29 years as a Crime Prevention Spe- cialist for the city of Eu- gene Police Department. He is an expert on crime prevention through en- vironmental design, par- ticularly for schools and has consulted widely in the United States. Schneider now works on promoting safe home- less camp designs. CSS is funded primar- ily through community donations. Another CSS program is Safe Spot Communities. It pro- vides legal, designated places for people who are without a conventional form of housing. There are currently three SSCs, each focusing on a dif- ferent demographic of the houseless population: people with disabilities, a site for veterans, and another site for a mixed population. studies, got some fresh air and still remained safe.
