For the first time since 2019, spectators filled the venue’s grandstands for an evening of races, complete with the Speedway’s annual Easter egg hunt, which sent children scrambling to collect 1,000 plastic eggs hidden throughout the middle of the raceway. A palpable joy painted the faces of families, the re- turn of fans to the Speedway was a much-anticipated moment for many. “People are super passionate about this place,” said Speedway owner Heather Boyce. “And last year they definitely missed being here. We heard that a lot.” Restrictions resulting from COVID-19 prevented an audience at the Speedway last year, though the re- cent downgrading of the county’s risk level has As the season turns to spring, the Cottage Grove Public Library is hoping to entice the pub- lic to turn some pages. Th e inaugural event of “Library in the Park” was held in the Bohemia Park pavilion on Tues- day (April 6), displaying crates of books on picnic tables. “One thing we’re doing here is just trying to get more access to books for the public. And also do a little bit outreach,” said Head Librarian Natasha Chitow. “We understand that it’s not always easy to do curbside pickup or to pick out books that you want without actually seeing them in person. “So, we brought a lit- tle bit of the library here with us.” Th e library provid- ed gloves, sanitizer and masks so patrons could browse, check out, pick up curbside holds or sign up for library cards safe- ly. Th e event is currently planned to continue ev- ery Tuesday through the summer. Studies have shown the SARS-CoV-2 virus can stay on some library materials as long as seven days, said Chitow, so re- turned books are quaran- tined for a week. Library in the Park also features a family-friendly “Storywalk,” a partici- patory activity in which readers can follow direc- tions around the park as they read through a story. Th is week’s story was of- fered in both English and Spanish, directed mainly at a younger audience.
