This year, due to COVID, the nonprofit has taken a huge finan- cial hit and is making an appeal to the com- munity to help keep the doors open with a fundraising campaign. With a mission to inspire appreciation of local history through hands-on education, SCEC provides year long programs includ- ing homeschool, sum- mer camps, school field trips, in-classroom presentations, out- door school, and eve- ning “Homestead Arts” classes. Many of its students return year after year for the engaging pro- grams and events that focus on local history. This year they launched a new summer camp about Opal Whiteley, which featured nature studies and journaling. Donations are tax deductible as allowed by law and each donor (over $50) will receive a special thank you gift in the mail. Construction on Ter- ritorial Highway proj- ect has wrapped up for the winter and traffic through the construc- tion area is back to two- way travel. Traffic signals have also been removed. County staff and the contractor will continue to monitor the project site throughout the win- ter to ensure the road stays safe to travel. Construction will re- sume once the weather improves next spring 2021. The county will con- tinue to share project updates through its project e-newsletter. The highway project is a result of many years of input and coordination with a community of residents, bicycle riding groups, freight compa- nies and other stake- holders to discuss ways to address safety con- cerns on the 5.7-mile stretch of rural road. The four-phase proj- ect will widen the road to include six-foot shoulders and 11-foot vehicle lanes while soft- ening curves in certain areas. Between the widen- ing and realignment of curves, it is hoped road access and sight dis- tance for all traffic will be greatly improved. Two two-year terms and a one-year term are currently open. Applicants will be in- terviewed and then con- firmed by the Cottage Grove City Council. The role of the Vision Keepers is to monitor progress of the Cottage Grove 2037 Vision Ac- tion Plan, encourage im- plementation of actions, provide technical assis- tance or support where appropriate, produce annual progress reports and recommend minor modifications to the plan as necessary. The Vision Keepers hold quarterly team progress meetings and develop annual awards to recognize individu- als and organizations for exceptional ser- vice toward promoting achievement of the Cot- tage Grove 2037 Action Plan.
