COM The First Amendment C ongress shall make no law respect- ing an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Govern- ment for a redress of grievances. “I never considered a difference of opinion in politics, in religion, in philosophy, as cause for withdrawing from a friend.” —Thomas Jefferson (1800) USPS#133880 Copyright 2020 © COTTAGE GROVE SENTINAL Letters to the Editor Policy The Sentinel welcomes letters to the editor as part of a community discussion of issues on the local, state and national level. Emailed letters are preferred. Handwritten or typed letters must be signed. All letters need to include full name, address and phone number; only name and city will be printed. Letters should be limited to about 300 words. Letters are subject to editing for length, grammar and clarity. Publication of any letter is not guaranteed and depends on space available and the volume of letters received. Letters that are anonymous, libelous, argumentative, sarcastic or contain accusations that are unsourced or without documentation will not be published. Letters containing poetry or from outside The Sentinel readership area will only be published at the discretion of the editor. Political/Election Letters: Election-related letters must address pertinent or timely issues of interest to our readers at-large. Letters must: 1) Not be a part of letter-writing campaigns on behalf of (or by) candidates; 2) Ensure any information about a candidate is accurate, fair and not from second-hand knowledge or hearsay; and 3) explain the reasons to support candidates based on personal experience and perspective rather than partisanship and campaign-style rhetoric. Candidates themselves may not use the letters to the editor column to outline their views and platforms or to ask for votes; this constitutes paid political advertising. As with all letters and advertising content, the newspaper, at the sole discretion of the publisher, general manager and editor, reserves the right to reject any letter that doesn’t follow the above criteria. Dear Friends and Fans of Bo- hemia Mining Days, This weekend would have been the 61st Annual Bohemia Min- ing Days Celebration. We un- derstand and support the public health decision to prohibit large gatherings to prevent the spread of the deadly COVID-19 virus. The festival’s cancellation is a deeply felt loss not only for those who produce this much antici- pated summer tradition but also for thousands of participants. For six decades, BMD has op- erated from year-to-year on a shoestring budget provided by generous annual donors and revenue from the carnival, ven- dors, the beer garden, fundrais- ing meals and (in recent years) a silent auction. With the un- expected cancellation, the only revenue we will have this year is donations from individuals, businesses and organizations who love the festival and want to see it continue. Producing Cottage Grove’s largest event of the year takes year-round planning. To sup- Guest Viewpoint By BMD Board of Directors port that planning, we maintain a small office in the historic Cot- tage Grove Hotel and pay for our rent, phone, post office box and website. Our Festival Coordina- tor, Cindy Weeldreyer, is an in- dependent part-time contractor who coordinates our planning process and handles administra- tive tasks, fundraising, promo- tion and publicity. To ensure there will be a BMD 2021, we need to raise money this weekend to sustain us through the global pandemic until next spring when our annual sponsor and vendor revenues resume. “Got a buck for BMD 2021?” is our current campaign designed to give Grovers the opportunity to invest in next year’s celebra- tion. We invite BMD supporters to stop by our table, July 16-19, near the tennis court parking lot and make a donation of any size to ensure the future of Bohemia Mining Days. All donors receive a keepsake button from a previous year with our thanks. We also will have a limited number of collectible gold coins for sale for $25 each, which were minted for our 50th anniversary in 2009. Come to “Bohemia City” in Coiner Park today through Sun- day (July 16-19) during these times: Thursday and Friday, 4 to 8 pm; Saturday, Noon to 8 p.m.; and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to visit and to make your monetary donation. Donors can mail a check or money order payable to BMD and send to P.O. Box 1297, Cot- tage Grove, Ore., 97424. To make a credit card payment call the Festival Office at 541.942.5064. Thank you very much. We look forward to seeing you this weekend! nhickson@cgsentinel.com HOW TO CONTACT YOUR REPS Oregon state representatives Oregon federal representatives • Sen. Ext. 1207 gmanly@cgsentinel.com ‘What’s going on?’ (Editor’s Note: Viewpoint sub- missions on this and other topics are always welcome as part of our goal to encourage community discussion and exchange of perspectives.) In the 1960s in southern Cal- ifornia, I became aware of tra- ditional streams of American Christianity that involved “Giv- ing Witness.” In Catechism class, it was explained to me that this referred to the values and stan- dards you displayed in the way you live. But but you could also look to it as a social activity by which you declare your spiritual and social thesis to people on the street with impromptu exhorta- tions. This past Saturday afternoon (July 11), I went to a local gas sta- tion. In the length of time it took to fill up my car with gas, the attendant filling my tank gave a passionate and angry lecture to me which, in retrospect, I believe was “Giving Witness.” He began his lecture with “I don’t believe in Black Lives Matter.” Through seven excru- ciating minutes of harangue, the gas attendant explained that he, instead, believed that “All Lives Matter.” He concluding his lec- Guest Viewpoint By Leo Rivers Cottage Grove ture with how a white girl was raped and mutilated by five black youths in the recent past, and how news outlets refrained from covering it — thus proving a me- dia committed to prejudiced re- porting. In essence, I feel he was deliv- ering a Red State Credo, postur- ing as a “concerned citizen” who was a clear thinker in a world full of people who did not think for themselves at all. I extricated myself from the situation by keeping silent, wish- ing him the best and driving away with a tight smile. His en- tire speech was a series of hooks by which he wanted to drag me in to a skirmish in the Culture war. It was only after I got home later that, in thinking about all this, I noticed three important factors. 1) I realized that, in my life, I have never had someone just buttonhole me to dress me down. 2) My “COEXIST” bumper sticker was probably the trig- ger for his assuming that he has found the right target. And 3) The time it takes to fill up someone’s tank with gas is a perfect measure of time to deliv- er a one-sided debate to some- one who will be stuck there from beginning to end. I have been getting my gas from this station and this gentle- man for some years, and there’s never been the slightest hint of anything like this before.
