He then served as a Drill Instructor with 3rd Battalion, 2nd Recruit Training Regiment, Marine Corp Recruit Depot Parris Island, SC until his release from active duty in July 1971. He later served 4 years in the Marine Corp Active Reserve, 22 years in the US Army Active Reserve and 1 year on US Army active duty. During that time, he served in the posi- tions of Motor Transport Chief, Senior Drill Sergeant, Drill Sergeant School Chief Instructor, Battalion Operations Sergeant, First Sergeant, Brigade Intelli- gence Sergeant, and Battalion and Brigade Command Sergeant Major. He was a graduate of the US Army Sergeants Major Academy and was holding the position of Command Sergeant Major with the 6th Brigade (Pro- fessional Development), 95th Division (Institutional Training) when he retired from military service in 2006.
