Allen passed away quietly at her home on October 17, 2019, at the age of 96. She was born in Eugene, Oregon, on May 25, 1923, to Andrew Brund, a Danish immigrant, and Grace Marsters Brund, a native-born Oregonian. Except for a brief time in high school, Marcia lived her entire life in the Cottage Grove area. She married her high school sweetheart, Boyd Allen, on September 19, 1941. They were both lifelong members of the Methodist Church. A video, caught by store camera, captured the mo- ment three robbers at- tempted to remove items from behind the counter when Scott caught one per- petrator by surprise and single-handedly restrained another by the hair. After a vicious struggle, the theives recoiled and es- caped into darkness. Later, around 1 a.m., Scott decided to talk to police about the incident outside his home on his cell phone when he noticed commotion at nearby CG Market & Deli that resulted in a break-in. Shortly afterward, four squad cars descended onto CG Market with officers ‘Beds for Freezing Nights’ seeks site volunteers Beds for Freezing Nights is preparing for its 12th season of offering a warm bed on the coldest of winter nights. A shelter will open at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 1025 N. 19th St. in Cottage Grove, when the aver-age temperature drops below 29 degrees from Nov. 15 through March 31. Two volunteers are needed to staff the shelter during each of the follow- ing shifts: 6 to 11 p.m., 10:45 p.m. to 4 a.m., and 3:45 a.m. to 8 a.m. Responsibilities include setting up/taking down shelter supplies, check- ing guests in and out and supervising the shelter. Volunteers are required to undergo a $10 back- ground check and attend the Saturday, Nov. 9 train- ing meeting at OLPH from 10 a.m. to noon. Colleen Frances DeGroat 1935-2019 Colleen Frances DeGroat, 84, of Cottage Grove, OR passed away October 24, 2019 in Cottage Grove following a stroke. She was born in Sweet Home, February 20, 1935 to parents Cliff ord and Gladys (Howes) Groat. She attended and graduated from Cottage Grove High School, and at- tended Lane Community Col- lege studying psychology. Shirley 1928-2019 Th ey married October 22, 1949 and remained in Drain until James Gordon Shirley, best known as Bus, was an honor- able man who lived his life with high character. He was born February 11, 1928 in Suther- lin, Oregon on the the family homestead. His long and well lived journey on earth ended on the evening of October 19, 2019 in Gresham, Oregon, due the eff ects of dementia. Th e youngest of three, Bus was born to parents, James (Ed) Edgar Shirley and Henrietta Egretta (Redhead) Shirley. Sis- ters were Marie Louise Haines and Jean Carmen Rowntree. Th roughout their childhood and adult lives, Bus and Jean shared a closeness that brought them much joy and comfort. As a child, and aft er his fa- ther’s heart attack, the family moved to Drain, OR. Bus grad- uated from Drain Union High in 1947. While in high school he fell in love with and dated Margaret (Jo) Joanne Roach. Surviving him are his son Tom Force in 1951. She was an Oregon delegate to 9 American Dental Assistants Association Conventions. After retiring in 1980, she became an active member of the local historical society. She was the coordinator for re- search volunteers for the Cot- tage Grove Survey and Inven- tory Project for the National Historic Preservation Project. She was instrumental in pres- ervation of the covered bridges and other structures in the area and was a tour guide for local bus tours. The Cottage Grove Historical Society’s research library is named the Marcia E. Allen Historical Society Li- brary in her honor. Among numerous other awards, in 2011, she received the Oregon Heritage Excellence Award for her efforts toward historical preservation. She truly be- lieved that “history that is not written down is forgotten.” Marcia and her husband Boyd had 5 children; Carol Jean, Judy (Harvey), Jim (Don- na), Steve (Earleine), and Cheri (Steve). She had 7 grandchil- dren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchil- dren. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Boyd, infant daughter Car- ol Jean, grandson Scott, and great-granddaughter Madison. A memorial service and cel- ebration of life will be held at a later date.
