2A | WEDNESDAY, MAY 29, 2019 | COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL On The Record ELECTION RESULTS South Lane School District 45J3 Of four South Lane School District seats up for election, all but one ran unopposed. In the contested race for posi- tion 7, incumbent Gary Mort, who was first elect- ed to the board in 2015, retained his seat with about 57 percent of the vote. Results: Demian Schartz: 721 Gary Mort: 1,007 Write-in: 36 In positions 1, 3 and 6, candidates ran un- opposed. Included in that were incumbents Tammy Hodgkinson and Jerry Settelmey- er, who were both re-elected. Hodgkinson has served on the board since 2011 and Settelmeyer since 2015. The other candidate running unopposed was Dustin Bengston who was elected to po- sition 3. Bengston, the lone new face on the board, decided to run for the position after having conversations with in- dividuals around the community and see- ing an opening on the board. “I really want to try to help the district make sound decisions for the future. We’ve got a re- ally important decision coming up with the superintendent,” said Bengston. “I’ve had some experience in both selecting and sup- porting a leadership type position so I’m hoping I have some- thing to offer there.” The one contested race was for position seven. Board members serve for four years at a time and the new- ly elected members will be joining Taylor Wilhour, Sherry Du- erst-Higgins and Alan Baas — whose terms all expire in June of 2021 — on the board. Measure 20-299 Lane County voters rejected a $154 million bond to build a new county courthouse. The measure failed to pass with about 58 percent of voters in opposition. A new courthouse would have replaced the current 60-year-old building and was meant to address space issues, regularly occurring plumbing and elevator failures and safety and security risks for vic- tims, witnesses, visitors and others. Upon review of the final election results, Lane County officials have stated they will determine whether the Oregon Legislative As- sembly will continue to make available up to $94 million toward Lane County’s courthouse construction before de- ciding whether to place an updated bond mea- sure before voters in a future election. Officials say the leg- islative funding is not enough to build the courthouse on its own and requires a local in- vestment. local option levy of $1.50 per $1,000 of assessed value for general opera- tions of schools for the next five years, begin- ning in 2020. The mea- sure passed with about 60 percent approval.
