Fire Crew Quickly Extinguishes Small Fire On Grant Ave. By Zach Silva zsilva@cgsentinel.com South Lane County Fire and Rescue (SLCFR) responded to a house fi re on Grant Avenue in Cottage Grove last Th urs- day aft ernoon. According to offi cials, they believe a faulty ceiling fan in an upstairs bathroom was responsible for the blaze, which caused minor damage to the home. Residents were in the home at the time of the fi re but safely evacuated the premises. “On our arrival, we saw Healthy teeth start early Do you know the most common chronic disease that faces young children today? It’s not asthma or hay fever. It’s actually cavities in children’s teeth, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Fortunately, this common health problem can be corrected if it’s caught early enough and good habits are taught from a young age. CRITICAL TO HEALTH For children, cavities are about more than mouth pain. Th ey can distract students from learning or keep them home from school, which can have a big impact on their educational goals. It’s tough for a child to “be himself” when he is distracted by tooth pain, aft er all. To keep your child’s teeth in tip-top shape, experts recommend they see a dentist for a checkup by their fi rst birthday, or shortly aft er their fi rst teeth appear. Th at’s an early visit — and one too many parents skip — but it can help catch oral health problems quickly and also set the stage for a lifetime of healthy teeth. GOOD HABITS One of the most important aspects of good oral health is maintaining good habits, and that’s especially true for children. It’s another reason why regular dental visits are so important for young people. When children go to the dentist, they’re not only getting work done on their teeth. Th ey’re also learning lessons about oral hygiene that can last a lifetime. Ideally, you’ll want to fi nd a dentist who is good at teaching children how to take care of their teeth properly. If the dentist can make it fun for the child — and show them how important it is to take care of their oral health — they’ll be much better off later in life. light to moderate smoke com- ing from the eaves of the sec- ond story of the house,” said SLCFR Division Chief Aaron Smith, who was on the scene. “We were able to make entry, go off ensive and fi ght the seed of the fi re and extinguish the fi re within seconds.” Two engines and two medic units responded to the fi re. Smith noted that fi res start- ed by ceiling fans are not un- common. “Th ose ceiling fans have caused the fi re service problems for a number of years. Th ose things they need to be maintained,” said Smith. In 2017, a local resident and business owner walked into the Cottage Grove Chamber of Commerce office with an idea about how to encourage entrepreneurship, create new jobs and give back to the com- munity that contributed to his own success. Harold Frazier of New Breed Seed Company do- nated $10,000 and said he sim- ply wanted it to go to some- one with a great business plan that would create new jobs in the Cottage Grove area. The Chamber of Commerce, Cot- tage Grove Community De- velopment Corporation and RAIN Eugene joined for sev- eral months of meeting, and in those meetings the Cottage Grove Business Challenge was born. Twenty-four hopeful en- trepreneurs took the chal- lenge and three were chosen to receive funds to help start their businesses: Mike Caven of Sanity Chocolate won the first-place prize of $6,000; Joey Jaraczewski of Sohr Per- formance + Nutrition won $3,000; and Kim Johnson with Real Live Food Oregon won $1,000. Later this month, entrepre- neurs are invited once again to take the challenge and submit their business plan ideas for a chance to win up to $10,000 in start-up funding. Submis- sions must come in the form of a (no more than four-page) executive summary of their business plan and the business must create new jobs in the Cottage Grove area. Those who accept the chal- lenge will have access to a se- ries of classes through Lane Community College and the Small Business Development Center, Liveplan business plan writing software will be provided by Palo Alto, as well as mentor support from sea- soned business leaders. Submissions for the Cottage Grove Business Challenge are due May 1. A kickoff networking event to generate interest will be held Wednesday, Feb. 27, from 6 to 8 p.m., at The Brewsta- tion, 106 Sixth St. in Cottage Grove. All interested parties including entrepreneurs, in- vestors, sponsors and business leaders are encouraged to at- tend the kickoff event. Addi- tional challenge information can be found at www.cgbiz- plan.com. Submitted Report Aft er all, the habits they pick up now will likely stick with them for a long time. BABY TEETH Some parents may wonder why they need to pay so much attention to their children’s baby teeth when they won’t last through adulthood anyway. But the truth is that the health of their gums and teeth as children can impact their smile as an adult. Experts at the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry say that baby teeth play three big roles: — Maintaining good nutrition by permitting your child to chew properly. — Play a part in speech development. — Help the permanent teeth by saving space for them. In the end, having healthy teeth is also an important part of having a healthy body. Th ey will help your child eat right, learn to speak and smile with confi dence.
