Facing the Monarchs (19-7, 10-3 Skyline) in the third-place game at the Skyline League Tournament in Coos Bay on Saturday, it was the Warriors (17-10, 10-3) exacting revenge as they rolled to a 45-32 victory to secure the final league spot at the state tournament. “The boys wanted revenge on UVC,” said North Douglas head coach Tyler Vancil. Earlier in the season the Warriors lost 52-48 in the first matchup and fell 61-51 in triple overtime the second time they met. “I said, ‘How do you guys feel about playing UVC?’ And all of them, unanimously, wanted to play them again. It was one of those things, they got us and we wanted to get them. The biggest game out of all three of them was this one.” It looked like this third meeting was destined to be another close game. North Douglas started the game fast, including 10 points from Cal Parks in the opening quar- ter, but UVC rallied and continued to have answers throughout the game. “I said, ‘Our backs are against the wall, if we lose, we’re done.’ That’s just kind of the mentality we have in the locker room,” said Vancil. “If you don’t want to be done, you’re going to go out there, you’re going to dig, you’re going to play with heart and effort and outwork the other team.” Entering the fourth quarter with a four- On Friday, in the league semi-finals, the Warriors fell to Days Creek (20-5, 12-1) 43- 35. “We shot 28 percent for the game. The swim team saw three in- dividuals qualify for the state meet that took place at the Tu- alatin Hills Aquatic Center in Beaverton last Saturday. For the girls it was MJ Raade while the Cottage Grove boys were represented by Ian Dukes and James Kelly. In prelims on Friday, Raade took 11th place in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:47.39. On the boys side, Dukes took 8th in both the 100-yard breaststroke prelims, in a time of 1:06.42, and the 500-yard freestyle, in a time of 5:20.82. Kelly was 12th in prelims in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:38.95. The Cottage Grove cheer team finished in 6th place as a team over the weekend while they were competing at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland. The team record- ed 151.20 points finishing with 51.80 in building skills, 51.40 in tumbling/jumps and 49.00 in overall routine.
