COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL • JANUARY 9, 2019 • House from A1 was like ‘end of an era, Benja- min Lurch dead in San Fran- cisco.’” Prior to his death, Lurch had quick-claimed the property to his daughter, Lilly, but she didn’t hang onto it very long. Somewhere between 1922 and 1926, the house was moved from its location on Main Street to where it sits now, next to the Red Oak tree on Adams Street. A developer named Earl Hill was in possession of the prop- erty by 1936 and, in 1946, 412 Adams was sold to and held by a family for more than 50 years. Cora Dailey and the Dai- ley family held the home un- til 2014, when it was sold to a member of Th e Sentinel’s pre- vious sales staff — a man who used to sit at the desk Santana currently occupies. “Th ere’s a lot of connections between Th e Sentinel and the house,” he said. “Th ere were so many things — signs that led us to the house.” By the time Santana en- tered the house in 2018, it was a mess. Th e electrical system wasn’t up to code, the exterior needed a lot of work and some of the rooms had been left half renovated. Laws from A1 “I had started pulling down the cobwebs and the wallpaper, but the more I thought about the house and the history, I started wondering if I should be taking all of these things down,” he said. So, Santana embarked on a journey to uncover the history of his new home with the help of the local historical society. Now, Santana is working with the historical society to give a talk later this year on the property’s history and, with the exception of the exterior, the interior of the house is livable again and mirrors the house’s history. “We changed some things,” Santana said. “But except for a few fi xtures and some drywall in the entry, it’s back to livable.” Th e family doesn’t mind the renovation process. Before moving from California, they owned an old Victorian house in a popular area of the state that used to be home to writ- er Jack Kerouac. When they decided to leave the area, one place topped their list: Para- dise, Calif. CAITLYN MAY/COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL “Yeah,” Santana said, “We al- most moved to Paradise.” Gerald Santana sits at his desk at The Sentinel, pulling up old articles and photos of his new home--the oldest house in Th e city became a ghost town Cottage Grove. “My gut was telling me, leave a history buff in terms of cine- are in the right place,” he said. aft er a wildfi re spread through more than half empty; all the community, decimating months aft er the Santana fam- California and we did,” he said, ma and he landed in the town noting that he has always been famous for Buster Keaton. “We houses, leaving entire blocks ily settled in Oregon. with at least 500 employees provide a “good faith estimate” of work hours and provide em- ployees their work schedules a week in advance. In 2017, the state legislature passed the Oregon Equal Pay Act — several key components of the law went into eff ect at the start of this month. Employees can fi le against their employers for unpaid wages and should a diff erence in pay exist between employees, the only acceptable reasons include merit, educa- tion, experience and quality of work. Th e law is intended to add additional protections to pre- vent wage disparities on the basis of gender, race, sexual orientation, veteran status, marital status, age or disability. Th e law also prohibits em- Worship With Us! ployers from hiring individuals based on their salary history. Domestic violence laws: Strangulation during the course of a domestic violence incident is now a felony in the state of Oregon. Th e act was previously considered a misde- meanor. Th e “boyfriend loophole” is now closed. Individuals con- victed of domestic abuse are barred from owning a fi rearm under House Bill 4145. Previously, abusers who were not married to their victim and did not share children with them could maintain their gun ownership leaving leeway for those who were simply dating the person they were convicted DENTAL Insurance Physicians Mutual Insurance Company A less expensive way to help get the dental care you deserve If you’re over 50, you can get coverage for about No wait for preventive care and no deductibles – $1 a day* you could get a checkup tomorrow Keep your own dentist! Childcare laws: Foster kids in the state can now receive tuition waivers for community college and univer- sities. As of Jan. 1, students will no longer have to complete 30 hours of community service to qualify if they’ve spent time in the state’s foster care system. House Bill 4067 expands the defi nition of special education allowing children with devel- opmental disabilities under the age of 10 to receive free services within the public education system. Hit and run: In 2013, sisters Abigail Rob- inson and Anna Dieter-Eck- ert were killed when a neigh- bor hit them with her vehicle while they were playing in a pile of leaves near the street. Th e neighbor felt what she described as a “bump” but continued driving, not imag- ining she had hit two chil- dren. Th e neighbor eventually turned herself in aft er con- necting her car ride to the girls’ deaths and was sen- tenced to probation and com- munity service. Anna and Abigail’s law, in eff ect as of Jan. 1, requires drivers to return to the scene as soon as they have reason to believe they hit a person or a pet. Retirement: Th e state can no longer con- sider pension funds or funds being held in a retirement account when determining whether or not a family is eli- gible for temporary assistance such as food stamps.
