New American Heritage Girls troop collecting funds for fire victims Th e girls forming the local American Heritage Girls troop are gathering cash donations and gift cards to send as aid to the Paradise, Calif., communi- ty through the Paradise Four- square Church, which was de- stroyed in the Paradise Camp Fire. Th ere are four collection jars in the community located at the Cottage Grove Sentinel offi ce, Dirt Cheap Copies, the UPS Store and Th e Bookmine. Th e American Heritage Girls is a faith-based, character building, and service oriented organization for girls from the ages 5 to 17. Th e Cottage Grove troop sponsor is the local VFW chap- ter, and is is meeting at the VFW Hall, 3160 Hillside Dr., on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. Th e Senior Pastor at Para- dise Foursquare Church, Chris Hines, said Walmart, Target, gas, Winco and Visa cards are best for helping the California wildfi re victims. He also said GoFundMe ac- counts are not the best route at this time since it can take away from FEMA federal assistance. All cash donated by our community will be turned into one of the recommended cards and sent down in three batches leading up to Christmas. Many churches in the Par- adise area are stepping up for immediate needs for the many people in their community, regardless if they are church members. Many victims are able to re- ceive immediate need but the impact of the devastating fi res is ongoing. For more information, con- tact Sandy Camerat 541-942- 6417. Video contest on workplace safety now open to Oregon high school students High school students across Ore- gon are invited to let their video skills shine for a good cause: increasing awareness about workplace safety for young workers. Th e annual “Speak up. Work safe.” video contest is now open for sub- missions. Th e top three entries will take home cash prizes ranging from $300 to $500, and students will earn a matching amount for their school. Students must create a 90-second or less video that inspires young work- ers to do at least one thing diff erent- ly to stay safe on the job. Th e video must include the theme: “Speak up. Cottage Theatre presents Work safe.” Th e video must educate young workers about the importance of speaking up in the workplace. Par- ticipants are encouraged to develop a key message or slogan, use humor, and get creative while emphasizing ways to protect themselves — and their co-workers — from getting hurt on Nov 30 - Dec 16 A to t touching uchi ing fable f b fa ble about abo passion and inno ocenc e innocence the job. Submissions will be judged on cer- tain criteria, including: • An original health and safety mes- sage that appeals to teen workers and safety educators • Overall production value (video/ audio quality, acting, and editing) • “Speak up.
