By Zach Silva zsilva@cgsentinel.com With just two athletes com- peting, the girls of the Elkton track team made their mark at the state track and fi eld meet over the weekend. On Th ursday, it was Sadie Ol- son getting things going for the Elks as she fi nished in second place in discus. Olson placed ninth in the shot-put competi- tion on Friday. On the track, it was a busy couple of days for Elkton’s Mar- garet Byle. By Zach Silva zsilva@cgsentinel.com In the early stages of the 2A high jump competition, Yon- calla’s Laaron Lopez, who fi n- ished second, could not miss. As competitors knocked the bar, Lopez cleared his fi rst six heights on his fi rst attempts. “When I started clearing 5-6, 5-8, 5-10, they’re easy for me. But aft er 5-10 my adrenaline starts kicking in because that’s when I get to see my competi- tion and I start jumping higher and working harder. So that’s really what helped me today,” he said. With just two jumpers left in the competition, Lopez cleared 6-2 on his third attempt while Brody Davidson of Santiam cleared it on his second at- tempt, which won Davidson the title. “It feels awesome but disap- pointing at the same time. For Davidson, it was his fi rst time clearing a height over six feet. Lopez was the only member of the Yoncalla boys team com- peting at state. On the girls side, Yoncalla/ North Douglas’ 4x100 relay team of Kaleigh Soto, Saman- tha Baker, Rilie Jo Olds and Justice Cox took seventh while Yoncalla’s Shaunasi Hardy took eighth place in javelin. On the fi nal day of the regular season, the pair of teams were fi ghting for the fourth and fi nal playoff spot. Th e game was fol- lowed by a 13-0 loss to the Oak- ers that saw fi ve North Douglas pitchers in the fi rst three innings of play. With the tiebreaker against the Warriors in their hand, the Elks then just needed one win to head to the playoff s. Th ey lost the fi rst game of the day 10-3 to Oakridge but in the second game, it was their game. Th e team held a 4-0 lead before the visiting Oakridge side scored four runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game and walk away with an 8-5 victory. “Not the way we wanted to end,” said Elkton head coach Bill Shaw. “What happened was they just hit the snot out of the ball.” On Saturday, North Doug- las took on Oakridge in the league-playoff where they won 5-4.
