In the early stages of the 2A
high jump competition, Yon-
calla’s Laaron Lopez, who fi n-
ished second, could not miss.
As competitors knocked the
bar, Lopez cleared his fi rst six
heights on his fi rst attempts.
“When I started clearing 5-6,
5-8, 5-10, they’re easy for me.
But aft er 5-10 my adrenaline
starts kicking in because that’s
when I get to see my competi-
tion and I start jumping higher
and working harder. So that’s
really what helped me today,”
he said.
With just two jumpers left in
the competition, Lopez cleared
6-2 on his third attempt while
Brody Davidson of Santiam
cleared it on his second at-
tempt, which won Davidson
the title.
“It feels awesome but disap-
pointing at the same time. Like,
I’m freaking stoked. It’s such a

year to second place this year,”
said Lopez.
For Davidson, it was his fi rst
time clearing a height over six
feet.
Lopez was the only member
of the Yoncalla boys team com-
peting at state.
On the girls side, Yoncalla/
North Douglas’ 4x100 relay
team of Kaleigh Soto, Saman-
tha Baker, Rilie Jo Olds and
Justice Cox took seventh while
Yoncalla’s Shaunasi Hardy took
eighth place in javelin.

a game up heading into the day
and aft er both teams lost both
games of their double-header,

thank Elkton, North Douglas
started the day with a 10-5 loss
to Oakland. Th e game was fol-
lowed by a 13-0 loss to the Oak-
ers that saw fi ve North Douglas
pitchers in the fi rst three innings
of play.
With the tiebreaker against
the Warriors in their hand, the
Elks then just needed one win
to head to the playoff s. Th ey lost
the fi rst game of the day 10-3
to Oakridge but in the second
game, it was their game. Th e
team held a 4-0 lead before the
visiting Oakridge side scored
four runs in the bottom of the
third to tie the game and walk
away with an 8-5 victory.
“Not the way we wanted to
end,” said Elkton head coach
Bill Shaw.
“What happened was they
just hit the snot out of the ball.”
On Saturday, North Doug-
las took on Oakridge in the
league-playoff where they won
5-4. Aft er the win, they then
placed Oakland in a win-or-go-
home game that saw the Oakers
take a 4-3 victory to move on to
the playoff s and end the season
for the Warriors.
