COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL DECEMBER 6, 2017 Warriors win the hustle battle, game North Douglas boys basketball power past Devils for win By Zach Silva Family & General Dentistry Douglas uglas G. G Maddess, M ad d d ess DMD DM “Brightening Lives One Smile at a Time” zsilva@cgsentinel.com Committed to fi ghting for every rebound, it was North Douglas who capitalized on hustle plays on Friday night to beat Lowell 55-41. “Wednesday we did not box out very well. First game jit- ter type of thing, that’s what it seemed like, we were just kind of out of sorts. Didn’t box out so that’s really what we harped on in practice yes- terday," said fi rst year head coach Tyler Vancil. "We did a lot of rebounding drills and I said we’ve got to box out and play defense. If we don’t box out you’re not going to win the board battle, you’re not going to win the game." While the Devils side had more length and size, it was the Warriors who were able to get second chance points that gave them an early lead that grew throughout the game. “This group of guys has a lot of heart. It’s clear, two games, even in practice you see it. Guys are diving on the fl oor in practice to get loose balls and it shows they’ve got a lot of heart,” said fi rst year coach Tyler Vancil. While Lowell’s three ball was keeping them in the game early, a 9-0 run in the second quarter put North Douglas up 32-18 and the Warriors sus- tained the lead for the rest of the game. Led by Koldan Frieze’s 17 points, the War- riors utilized a slowed down, patient offense in their half- court sets to fi nd good shots. Carson Burris added 11 points, Jake Gerrard 10 and Caleb Parks with nine for the Warriors. North Douglas won their season opener against Siletz Valley 66-47 and defeated Perrydale 68-53 on Saturday. “It’s a long season but couldn’t ask for a better start,” said Vancil. Elks rout Reedsport Elkton girls basketball starts season off 2-0 By Zach Silva zsilva@cgsentinel.com It was a fi nal score that was fi t for a football game: 49-7. But this was not a battle on the gridiron. Instead, it was the fi rst game of the season on the hard- wood for the Elkton girls team last Thursday against Reed- sport. From the start, it was all Elks all the time and at the end of the fi rst quarter the Elks were up Caring for your Health WE OFFER: 914 S. 4th Street Cottage Grove 541-942-1559 www.douglasgmaddessdmd.com •Spine Care •Orthopedic/Sports Rehab •Job Injuries •MVA •Foot Care •Chronic Pain Syndrome •Stabilization Therapy •Manual Therapy •McKenzie Method •Women’s Health •Pelvic Floor Rehab •Aquatic Therapy • FREE & unlimited access to Anytime Fitness Club during clinic hours • Lunchtime, evening, early morning appointments • Convenient location within the Safeway Plaza Cottage Grove Physical Therapy ??? The Braves fi n- ished the game shooting two-of- twenty from the fi eld. “We had good effort, people were going to the right places. We executed what we wanted to do and we also saw some things we need to work on which is what you want to see in that fi rst game,” said Elkton head coach Rob Parker. Elkton’s dominance, that saw Reedsport go scoreless for two quarters, came in the form of their stifl ing full-court press and their rebounding advantage. The Elks created 37 Reedsport turnovers and outrebounded the Braves 37-16. Reedsport attempted to press the Elks but Elkton was just a pass away from breaking the press and having an advan- tage on the offensive end. This helped lead to 16 points for Hannah Maxwell and 12 points added in from Keryn Carnes. “They came out and we took them out of their press. I don’t think they knew what they were doing,” said Parker. In the second half Elkton grew more patient on offense as they looked to fi nd the best scoring option. “That’s what we talked about at halftime, slow it down, let’s work the ball, let’s get better shots. We didn’t need threes, we didn’t need a lot of outside shots. We wanted to work for lay-ins,” said Parker. The Elks took just one three all game. Elkton continued their win- ning ways on Thursday as they defeated Riddle 64-31. Maxwell led the team with 24 points.
