COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL SEPTEMBER 13, 2017 5A Cottage Grove Retrospective A look back at Sentinel stories from 30 and 60 years ago Tidbits from September 11, 1947 Total enrollment the fi rst day was 480 pupils and about ten have been added to that during the week. By classes the fi gures show 141 freshmen, 132 sophomores, 114 juniors and 93 seniors, all of which show an added number over last year except the senior class. High School Begins School work at the Union High School in Cottage Grove started off in full swing on Monday, with only one substitute teacher necessary for the position vacated last week by Joseph Toman, assistant coach. The regu- lar instructor took over yesterday, however, with Roger Peterson, newly elected to the faculty, in charge of classes in physical ed- ucation and United States history. Peterson, with his wife and small daughter have just arrived in Oregon from Minnesota where he taught the past three years. He is a graduate of the University of North Dakota. The enrollment of high school students exceeds last year by only thirteen, most of these coming from the area of the Dorena dam where nine students are picked up at the housing project. The bus from the Dis- ston section carries fourteen more pupils than last year. Little Theater Finds Hidden Talent Cottage Grove now has its own “Little Theater” group. The fi rst meeting was held last Tuesday evening at 8 o’clock in the Jefferson grade school library. Headed by Mrs. Bill Bartel Jr., the group began making plans for the ensuing year, and from all in- dications, it’s to be a big one. The preliminary explanations being over, the group and others who are interested will meet next Tuesday 16th, at 8 o’clock in the Jefferson grade school library. This meeting is for the express purpose of reading over POLICE BLOTTER September 8 A disturbance was reported on Palmer street when t males were seen in a fi st fi ght. A slender 5’11 male was yell- ing and swinging objects to- wards vehicles in the middle of Harrison St. September 10 A man reported that the neighbors told his son that if he went into their yard that they would shoot him. This incident happened on Harrison Ave. Cottage Grove Police Department 24-Hour Anonymous Tip Line: 767-0504 An intoxicated subject was seen falling off his bike near Veterans park. The subject was then helped to a bench. The police responded to a burglar alarm going off at the library. There was a report of a dog continuously being vicious to- wards the subject while she is inside a business on Main St. She notes that this is an ongoing issue. A grandfather who is not supposed to have contact with his grandchildren went to pick them up from Harrison Elemen- tary School while on the infl u- ence of drugs. The man also has a suspended driver’s license. September 11 September 7 Around 1:00 a.m. a woman o Hwy. 99 reported hearing three shots fi red from an unknown location. She said they sounded like they were from a .38. Illegal camping reported on N. 19th St. Male transient re- ported sleeping on the porch of the pre-school. Miss the Mayor's bike ride? The play is a comedy and a very pop- ular one and the show “Kiss and Tell” was in Cottage Grove not too long ago, so quite a few persons are familiar with it. If you are interested, come along and bring your friends. If you don’t have any friends (im- possible thought) or aren’t well acquainted, here’s your opportunity to become well ac- quainted with some of the best “Characters” in Cottage Grove! If you think your ability doesn’t include acting, there are always many other jobs that can be done and are necessary to hold a cast together. A play is only as good as the person backing it, so come out anyhow, and perhaps, who knows? News from the state and around the nation Authorities released the manifesto of the 26-year-old man who killed nine people during the October 1, 2015 mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg. The document cites the shooter’s self-proclaimed “occult” status, an interview with his mother and his opinions of other mass shootings around the country. His mother told reporters her son was placed on psychiatric medication but stopped taking it when he was 18 years old and when she fi rst heard of the shooting, she called the hospital, the jail and then checked his room for his guns. From around the state Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden planned to block President Trump’s 9th Circuit Court nominee, Ryan Bounds noting that the nominee had not been selected through the judicial process. Due to eliminations of other checks and balances by democrats in 2013 and republicans in 2016, the only method for senators to veto nominee is known as the blue slip method. Senators from the nominee’s home state can object by refusing to hand in a blue slip of paper to the Senate Judiciary Committee. Theft reported near Jefferson. Complainant advised her trailer was stolen from the lot in the last few weeks. Lot belongs to her brother and has permission to store it there. Trailer taken by company that handles fore- closed properties. They mistak- enly thought the lot belonged to the house which was being fore- closed upon. Company requests police report to return property. Air quality in the state of Oregon improved slightly over the last week with areas that had been previously declared to have unhealthy air quality seeing normal ranges return. However, authorities estimate Oregon’s wildfi res will not be contained until October of this year. Intoxicated subject reported on E. Main St. Female appears to be under the infl uence and walking around the building. Stole something from behind the building, can’t tell what it is. When female was inside the salon she was not making any sense. Facebook testifi ed that it unknowingly sold $100,000 worth of campaign ads to a Russian company during the 2016 election between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Trespass reported on S. 3rd St. Complainant advised an un- known subject has been sleep- ing in his backyard and using his hot tub. House is vacant but he returns to check on it on a regular basis and use the hot tub. Complainant has drained the hot tub, turned off the pow- er, screwed the gate shut and still has problems with people entering the yard. They have dismantled the fl ower beds and part of the fence to get back in. Requests extra patrols to the area. Special counsel Robert Mueller plans to interview current and former White House aides in his continuing investigation in Russian interference during the 2016 election. Aides include former press secretary Sean Spicer, Reince Priebus, Hope Hicks and White House counsel Don McGahn. Donald Trump Jr. appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee last week in regards to the Russia investigation stating that he met with a Russian attorney in a meeting at Trump Tower during the campaign for information concerning Hillary Clinton’s “fi tness, character or qualifi cations.” This statement follows an original statement that cited the meeting as a discussion about a program surrounding the adoption of Russian children. Trump then noted he had met with the Russian attorney after receiving an email that promised damaging information about Clinton. Theft reported on N. 21st St. Possession of a controlled substance.
