Cottage Grove Retrospective
A look back at Sentinel stories from 30 and 60 years ago
Tidbits from September 11, 1947
Total enrollment the fi rst day was 480
pupils and about ten have been added to
that during the week. By classes the fi gures
show 141 freshmen, 132 sophomores, 114
juniors and 93 seniors, all of which show
an added number over last year except the
senior class.
High School Begins
School work at the Union High School in
Cottage Grove started off in full swing on
Monday, with only one substitute teacher
necessary for the position vacated last week
by Joseph Toman, assistant coach. The regu-
lar instructor took over yesterday, however,
with Roger Peterson, newly elected to the
faculty, in charge of classes in physical ed-
ucation and United States history. Peterson,
with his wife and small daughter have just
arrived in Oregon from Minnesota where he
taught the past three years. He is a graduate
of the University of North Dakota.
The enrollment of high school students
exceeds last year by only thirteen, most of
these coming from the area of the Dorena
dam where nine students are picked up at
the housing project. The bus from the Dis-
ston section carries fourteen more pupils
than last year.
Little Theater Finds Hidden Talent
Cottage Grove now has its own “Little
Theater” group. The fi rst meeting was held
last Tuesday evening at 8 o’clock in the
Jefferson grade school library. Headed by
Mrs. Bill Bartel Jr., the group began making
plans for the ensuing year, and from all in-
dications, it’s to be a big one.
The preliminary explanations being over,
the group and others who are interested will
meet next Tuesday 16th, at 8 o’clock in the
Jefferson grade school library. This meeting
is for the express purpose of reading over

the play which, by the way, is “Kiss and
Tell”. The play is a comedy and a very pop-
ular one and the show “Kiss and Tell” was
in Cottage Grove not too long ago, so quite
a few persons are familiar with it. If you
are interested, come along and bring your
friends. If you don’t have any friends (im-
possible thought) or aren’t well acquainted,
here’s your opportunity to become well ac-
quainted with some of the best “Characters”
in Cottage Grove!
If you think your ability doesn’t include
acting, there are always many other jobs
that can be done and are necessary to hold
a cast together. A play is only as good as
the person backing it, so come out anyhow,
and perhaps, who knows? Maybe there is a
streak of latent talent hidden in you which
will burst forth and surprise you and your
friends.

Authorities
released
the
manifesto of the 26-year-old man
who killed nine people during the
October 1, 2015 mass shooting at Umpqua Community College
in Roseburg. The document cites the shooter’s self-proclaimed
“occult” status, an interview with his mother and his opinions
of other mass shootings around the country. His mother told
reporters her son was placed on psychiatric medication but
stopped taking it when he was 18 years old and when she fi rst
heard of the shooting, she called the hospital, the jail and then
checked his room for his guns.
From around the state
Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden planned to block
President Trump’s 9th Circuit Court nominee, Ryan Bounds
noting that the nominee had not been selected through the
judicial process. Due to eliminations of other checks and
balances by democrats in 2013 and republicans in 2016, the only
method for senators to veto nominee is known as the blue slip
method. Senators from the nominee’s home state can object by
refusing to hand in a blue slip of paper to the Senate Judiciary
Committee.
Theft reported near Jefferson.
Complainant advised her trailer
was stolen from the lot in the

her brother and has permission

closed properties. They mistak-
enly thought the lot belonged to
the house which was being fore-
closed upon. Company requests
police report to return property.
Air quality in the state of Oregon improved slightly over the
last week with areas that had been previously declared to have
unhealthy air quality seeing normal ranges return. However,
authorities estimate Oregon’s wildfi res will not be contained
until October of this year.

known subject has been sleep-
ing in his backyard and using
his hot tub. House is vacant

Special counsel Robert Mueller plans to interview current
and former White House aides in his continuing investigation
in Russian interference during the 2016 election. Aides include
former press secretary Sean Spicer, Reince Priebus, Hope
Hicks and White House counsel Don McGahn. Donald Trump
Jr. appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee last week
in regards to the Russia investigation stating that he met with
a Russian attorney in a meeting at Trump Tower during the
campaign for information concerning Hillary Clinton’s “fi tness,
character or qualifi cations.” This statement follows an original
statement that cited the meeting as a discussion about a program
surrounding the adoption of Russian children. Trump then noted
he had met with the Russian attorney after receiving an email
that promised damaging information about Clinton.
