The technology replaces the 2D machine and helps professionals better screen denser tissue and provides more accurate readings. By Caitlyn May cmay@cgsentinel.com Every two minutes, a woman in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer, according to the Susan G. Koman Foun- dation which says early dedi- cation and effective treatment has contributed to a 38 percent decline in breast cancer deaths since 1989. PeaceHealth is hoping to in- crease that percentage. The Cottage Grove facility re- cently welcomed its long-com- ing 3D mammography machine. The technology was funded en- tirely through philanthropy and replaced a 2D machine that was no longer serviceable. The new machine began ser- vicing patients on June 13. According to the facility, the 3D machine better scans dense tissue and allows a better view of the area. It also requires less of a "squeeze." "We're a friendly, familiar place," said mammographer Louise Baker. The familiar at- mosphere attracts local patients and prevents them from putting off important screenings. "It's easy to put off those screenings if you don't want to drive into Eugene," she said. Armory Continued from A1 12. The site tested in the drill hall; the space community members gather for fundraisers and award nights came back higher than in the base test. In 2004, the area tested at 49. In the latest test, the result was 96. According to Meyers, the city's theory is that the space is directly in the path of visitors walking from out- side--specifi cally up the stairs leading to the armory. "That's lead paint on the stairs. And we think people are tracking it in," Meyers said. To verify the city's suspicions, Meyers ordered the stairs tested as well. The bottom section of the stairs closest to street level tested at 30. The middle section at 31 and the top level just be- fore entering the armory tested at 97. "You can see it building up on the stairs," Meyers said. As for why the middle section tested lower than the bottom section, Meyers said it could be explained by where the test area was located. "It's where he draws the square. If he moved over a foot, that reading could have been higher." In light of the new readings, Meyers said the city is planning on renovating the stairs outside the building at a cost of approx- imately $30,000. "We have to do the stairs any- way," Meyers said. Once the stairs are completed, Meyers said the city plans to do another cleaning of the armory and test the area again. "It’s conceivable that, with concrete stairs with lead paint can be responsible for track- ing," said Perry Cabot, a senior program specialist with the Multonmah County Health De- partment who is responsible for providing resources and educa- tion on lead poisoning preven- tion within the county. It would be a sensible explanation, he said, but without knowledge of the remediation process he said it’s impossible to know if it’s the sole culprit behind the elevated test. “There’s no way to say it’s only from tracking.” Cabot suggested that in other armories the ventilation system could be the culprit for spread- ing lead dust but according to Meyers, the Cottage Grove ar- mory does not have a ventila- tion system. "We don't have one!" he not- ed. "We have the old boilers and the ceiling fans." Meyers also noted that the city has been remediating the building as the restoration pro- gresses. "We clean, we treat every- thing like it has lead because it's an old building," he said. "All of our contractors and people who work on the building are certi- fi ed for lead." The remaining re-tested areas of the armory came in lower as well including a spot in an of- fi ce that went from 73 to 17, a basement sample that originally tested at 164 and came down to 51 and the highest reading of 2004 that measured at 345 came down to under fi ve in the 2017 test. Environmental Testing and Training Northwest out of Sa- lem conducted the tests on the armory and the results were pro- cessed by SanAir Technologies Laboratory, Inc. which is ac- credited by the Better Business Bureau. Coming renovations on the armory include the exterior, which Meyers says is next on the list after the stairs and sub- sequent testing. "We'll get the outside looking really nice," he said. "And we'll continue our fundraising." Editor’s note: As part of our service to the community and mission to provide the most ac- curate information available, The Cottage Grove Sentinel agreed to fund half the cost of the latest lead tests performed on the armory after being ap- proached to do so by Cottage Grove City Manager Richard Meyers. The testing was per- formed by a third-party, li- censed company and the results were obtained by The Sentinel Patients will still have to travel to Eugene for diagnostic tests but the new mammography machine, which was obtained through the charity of over 100 local donors, will save patients the drive for screenings. According to the facility, it served 1,300 women last year, a slow year due to the older 2D machine but now with the new technology the machine is New Beginnings 1133 E.
