Congratulations! to our Resident Employee number. The South Lane School District hosts swim lessons for students as well but according to McCasline splitting the cost of operation between the city and the school district is relative. "You can look at numbers different ways," she told the council. "The school could use the pool 60 percent of the time but main- tainence bills aren't split. It's just one bill," she said. McCasline went on to note that dividing the costs 60 to 40 percent did not always work out mathematically. Swim lessons are the pool's biggest money-maker but it also pro- vides public services that McCasline said may be subject to higher costs in the future as the pool's reserve fund continues to shrink. Councilman Mike Fleck suggested that, for long-term fi nancial health of the pool, the organization consider creating an endowe- ment to ensure the pool can continue services when and if the city can no longer afford to fi nance it. Current attendance levels hover close to 42,000 per year but that number is down from a high of 43,000 in 2012. However, it is a part of a pattern of steady increase in attendance since 2014. "People use the pool," McCasline said. The issue, however, is generating revenue. According to the presentation McCasline gave to the city council, it costs $120,000 to operate the pool per year. That includes utili- ties, supplies and maintenance. Staff costs, the variable McCasline says keeps increasing, were noted at $144,422 for 2017-2018. That expense has steadily been climbing since 2012 when estimates placed staffi ng costs at around $120,000. As a result of higher staff costs and a gap between what it costs to run the pool and what the pool receives from the city, the facili- ty's reserve fund has continuously dropped going from $100,000 in 2012 to under $40,000 in 2016. "Luckily the city steadily gives us $50,000," McCasline said. "But our reserve continues to drop and we could raise prices or cut programs in the future."
