6B COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL Oct. 5, 2016 CHAMBER NEWSLETTER Our Mission: Th e Cottage Grove Area Chamber of Commerce is organized to promote the economy and business environment of the Cottage Grove area so its citizens and businesses will prosper. Chamber Member Spotlight: Magnolia Gardens After 20 full years of being a business in Cottage Grove, Carmen Young, the owner of Magnolia Gardens is giving us a look into assisted living. Their business is home to more than 75 seniors and is truly an important part of this community. It was the fi rst business of its kind in Cottage Grove and is now thriving with the support for alternative to nursing homes. It currently has 51 assisted living apartments, ten rooms for memory care, and four independent living houses. One way that Magnolia Gardens supports their community is by getting involved with concerts in the park, Rotary and by sponsoring plays. “Giving back to the community is really rewarding because they’ve been good to us,” Carmen replied when asked about the connection between Cottage Grove and Magnolia Gardens. Competing with larger commercial businesses can be hard, but Magnolia Gardens takes pride in being a smaller, local business. This creates a sense of comfort and comradery with not just the residents, but the community as a whole. We asked Carmen why she was a chamber member and how her business benefi ts from it, “Cottage Grove is a small community, so you get to know everybody and the Chamber is a great way to do that.” She said this after telling us that she is a big fan of Business After Hours, a meeting done by chamber members that creates networking opportunities and bonds between businesses. Carmen was inspired to create an assisted living home because she thought it would be great if people didn’t have to go all the way to Eugene, but rather had the choice to stay in Cottage Grove. Once again, Magnolia Gardens was keeping our community in mind. Residents are treated extremely well, with weekly trips, an assortment of games, bingo, and live music. At the time of our interview, the residents were actually enjoying a sunny day at the coast. It’s important to keep a light, happy atmosphere in the facility and that’s exactly what Magnolia Gardens provides. Staff look forward to work each day because “it’s nice to work with a group that really appreciates what you do,” Carmen says referring to their residents, “it’s rewarding knowing that we’re enhancing their quality of life and they’re enhancing ours too.” We later asked if there were any residents that were especially memorable and she told us about one of her past residents who had died a day before her 100th birthday. This resident was sent a letter by John Deer, asking if she needed any farming equipment and she responded by asking for a walker. Finding this funny, John Deer later sent her one of their pink company hats. The story was, at one point, known throughout Cottage Grove and though the resident died a single day before her hundredth, her pink John Deer hat legacy will live on. It’s clear that Magnolia Gardens is an essential part of our community, and they would like to give a big thanks to the community of Cottage Grove for 20 years of continuous support, “this is a truly wonderful community.” – Interviewed and written by Savannah & Rain Member Benefi t Highlight Many of us continually look at our bottom line and try to decide where to cut back. Many times we decide to cut marketing and advertising budgets because it is one of the few areas that we have 100% control of. This can be a tough decision and is really one of the last areas we should cut back. This is where your membership with the Cottage Grove Chamber of Commerce can step in and really be benefi cial. One of the greatest benefi ts the Chamber offers is the Chamber Directory. All chamber members are listed in the directory. Advertising opportunities are also available to chamber members to further “Brand” their businesses throughout the Cottage Grove community. The Chamber prints 2000 directories each year and distributes them to all local businesses, hotels, the Visitor Information Booth and in includes them in our relocation packets. When someone moves or visits the Cottage Grove area they want to know where to go for goods and services. The Chamber Directory is their best resource and many times is more widely used and more user friendly than our local phone book. When people pick-up a Chamber Directory they know that the businesses listed within it are businesses that they can trust. If you own a business that is not a chamber member there is still time to be included. Joining the Chamber to get into the Chamber Directory is only one great benefi t of chamber membership. Participate in chamber membership and watch your marketing dollars stretch. The deadline for new member additions is November 15 th . To those of you who are already members, we thank you and hope you enjoy this great chamber benefi t! Please help us support Chamber member businesses and “Shop Chamber Members fi rst”!
