8A COTTAGE GROVE SENTINEL February 24, 2016 F AITH Special events Lent brings local churches together BY CINDY WEELDREYER Sentinel Faith Page Editor A sh Wednesday (Feb. 10) was the beginning of the Lenten Season, the period preceding Easter Sunday where many Christians are devoted to fasting, abstinence and penitence. In the Western Church it runs 40 weekdays between Ash Wednesday and Holy Saturday, the day before Easter. In liturgical faiths, such as Cath- olic, Episcopalian, Lutheran, Meth- odist and Presbyterian, the Lenten season commemorates two Biblical events of spiritual testing. In the Old Testament, it is the 40 years of wilderness wandering by the Isra- elites. In the New Testament, it is the account of Christ’s fasting for 40 days in the wilderness. Lent is the Christian season of preparation before Easter when many Christians observe a period of fasting, repentance, modera- tion, self-denial and spiritual dis- cipline. The purpose is to set aside time for refl ection on Jesus Christ: His suffering, sacrifi ce, life, death, burial and resurrection. During the six-weeks of self-examination and refl ection, Christians who observe Lent typically make a commitment to fast or to give up something — a habit, such as smoking, watching TV, swearing, a food or drink, such as sweets, chocolate or coffee. Some Christians also take on a Lenten discipline, such as reading the Bible and spending more time in prayer to draw nearer to God. Strict observers do not eat meat on Fridays, having fi sh instead. The goal is to strengthen the faith and spiritual disciplines of the observer, and develop a closer relationship with God. This year several local churches have partnered to enrich this sea- son for their congregations. On Shrove Tuesday (the day before Ash Wednesday), St. Andrews Episcopal Church and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church sponsored their annual community Pancake Supper with proceeds do- nated to Community Sharing. On Ash Wednesday, the First Presbyte- rian Church hosted a soup supper for local Methodists and Episcopa- lians followed by a joint worship service. The three churches will join together again and sponsor a Maundy Thursday joint service on March 24 hosted at the Cottage Grove United Methodist Church. Methodist Pastor Lura Kidner- Miesen was appointed last July. Presbyterian Pastor Karen Hill was installed last September. Rev. Law- rence Crumb, the Episcopal Vicar, who has served here for more than seven years, wanted to meet the two new pastors. Over lunch the trio had the idea of organizing a joint service. Crumb said his church mem- bers reacted positively to the Ash Wednesday service and are open to further possibilities of joint ser- vices. “A joint service with Holy Com- munion is possible because of an offi cial agreement between the Episcopal and United Methodists Churches.” Hill said the Ash Wednesday sup- per and worship service was a nice gathering of 69 people among the three churches. “Our folks loved hosting and were very happy to see so many friends. Lura gave a won- derful meditation, which still has HOPE AFTER ABORTION BIBLE STUDY – Thursday, March 3 from 6-8 p.m. Surrendering the Secret is an 8-week Bible study designed to bring God’s forgiveness and healing to women who have abortion in their past. I’m accustomed to sharing worship and ministry with others. Everyone has something of value to share and we all have much to learn about life with God from one another.” Kidner-Miesen agreed and said United Methodists work with Pres- byterians, Episcopalians and many other faiths at the regional and na- tional level. “Our Cottage Grove churches have done things together and supported each other in the past,” she said. “Cottage Grove churches often work together to ex- press our love for God and people. While disagreements and disputes make the news, much of the good in the world happens through col- laboration,” she added. “Our unity in Christ is greater and more im- portant than our differences. Col- laboration between churches pro- vides one way to live out Jesus’ call to love God and neighbor. My relationships with other pastors and Christians are very important to my spiritual journey – and it’s fun! Hill expressed a similar senti- ment. “I think it is really impor- tant for Christians to unite around our common faith, to support and encourage one another and to get to know one another. There is too much that divides people in the United States and faith should not be one of those things. How can we model Christ’s love for all human- ity if we don’t love one another? I have really enjoyed opportunities to meet other clergy since coming to Cottage Grove; and I’m grateful for all the good people serving God and God’s people in this town.” The next joint service is Maundy Thursday, March 24 at the United Methodist Church, 334 Washington Ave. The public is invited to enjoy a free soup supper at 6 p.m. with the worship service beginning at 6:45 p.m. The worship service in- cludes Holy Communion served by the clergy from the three churches.
