BY SAM WRIGHT The Cottage Grove Sentinel The Oregon Ducks celebrated their homecoming night with a victory over the California Golden Bears on Saturday. After what seemed like a gloomy be- ginning to the game, the Ducks scored 31 unanswered points after being down 10-0 early in the fi rst quarter. Quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. ran the ball into the end zone from ten yards out to tie the game at ten a piece in the second quarter, and from there, the Ducks never looked back. It was a night to remember for Adams, who completed 17 of 29 passes for 300 yards and four touchdowns through the air. Despite two interceptions, the transfer quarterback got in a groove and was able to ex- tend plays and make miraculous throws on the run. Adams found seven different receivers during the game, with his top receivers Darren Carrington and Bralon Addison on top of the board. Carrington had four receptions for 112 yards and Addison had fi ve receptions for 79 yards along with two touchdowns. Adams also found Charles Nelson out of the backfi eld for a 20 yards passing touchdown, along with two passes to Dwayne Stanford for 19 yards and a touchdown. “We started slow at fi rst, but then we got this going,” Adams said of his offense. “The O- line…I owe ‘em.” While the passing game was stout, what was even more im- pressive was the Ducks ability to run the football. Not since the days of Lamichael James or Kenjon Barner has Oregon seen such a performance from the backfi eld. The Ducks ran the ball a total of 63 times for a whopping 477 yards. Strangely enough, however, the only rush- ing touchdown came from Ad- ams in the second quarter. Royce Freeman had another 100+ yard game with 29 carries for 180 yards. But Oregon man- aged to utilize other weapons in the backfi eld. Tony Brooks- James ran the ball seven times for 101 yards, Kani Benoit had 94 yards on just eight carries, and Taj Griffi n also had eight carries for 59 yards. Had Ben- oit gotten the ball one or two more times, Oregon could have had three different rushers with other 100 yards on the game. Adams, too, ran the ball eight times for 43 yards and a touch- down on the ground. The Ducks reached the height of their offensive production on Saturday, accounting for 777 total yards on offense, a school record. Defensively, the second- ary still struggled, as Cal’s star quarterback, Jared Goff, had 329 passing yards, although he only completed 18 of 42 passes. The ground game on the other hand was much better. Oregon held the bears to only 103 to- tal yards rushing. Compare that with Oregon’s 477 and the fi nal score doesn’t seem to do the Duck’s domination justice. The Ducks head to Palo Alto to take on Stanford next week, which was ranked No. 8 this week and will probably move up after their domination over Colorado. “We just have to take in one game at a time, we’ll get right to looking at game fi lm on Mon- day,” said Adams. Boys soccer was unlucky as the No. 16 ranked Lions had to play their fi rst playoff game against No. 1 ranked Stayton. The Lions were unable to pull off the upset and lost 2-0. The Volleyball team had similar luck, also being ranked No. 16 and playing against No. 1 ranked Banks who beat the Lions 3-0. Football was unable to get past their play-in match, falling to Baker City 34-28 in a close and well-fought match. The most promising of Lions teams was girls’ soccer, a team that went into the playoffs ranked No. 8 after winning the Sky-Em league. It was the fi rst time Cottage Grove had won the Sky-Em league in girls’ soccer, and Head Coach Vern Stewart was even awarded coach of the year. The Lions went in to play No. 9 ranked Gladstone, but couldn’t keep their playoff run alive with a heart- breaking 2-0 loss.
