Here are a few ways to can plan ahead to make the experience an enjoy- ably memorable one. Visit the BMD website at www.bohemi- aminingdays.org for details on what to do and see this year. Cottage Grove's busiest month offers a schedule packed with nonstop action BY JON STINNETT The Cottage Grove Sentinel L ess rain than normal in the winter months and recent scorching temperatures have already made it feel like sum- mer for quite a while in Cottage Grove, but those familiar with south Lane County’s calendar know that summer just isn’t the same without many of the area’s signature July events. Here’s a roundup of some of the action that can be expected this month, from decades-old classics to brand-new offerings: At right: A full slate of activities is planned for this year's Cottage Grove Rodeo, which takes place Friday, July 10 and Saturday, July 11. Old Favorites New this year Bohemia Mining Days Arguably the biggest weekend in the Cot- tage Grove calendar, July 16-19 brings the 56th annual Bohemia Mining Days celebra- tion, and a full outline of what to expect for this week’s festival, themed “By Wing, By Wheel, By Engine of Steel” can be found in the Bohemia Nugget, which will appear along with the Sentinel’s July 15 edition. For now, lots of information on BMD can be found at the festival website, bohemiamin- ingdays.org, or by phone at 541-942-5064. Cottage Grove Rodeo A full slate of activities are on tap for the Cottage Grove Rodeo, scheduled this Fri- day, July 10 and Saturday, July 11 at the ro- deo grounds on Highway 99 south of town. Kids events begin at 5:30 p.m. with the grand entry set for 7 p.m. and a dance im- mediately following rodeo action. Featured events include a cow hide race, a dine and dash with proceeds benefi ting local families and the ever-popular Mutton Bustin’, calf riding, steer riding and junior bulls and bar- rels events for the young folk. More infor- mation on the Rodeo is available on Face- book or by calling 541-767-2472. ‘Tri’ it twice July is triathlon season in Cottage Grove, with the Warren H. Daugherty Aquatic Center’s fi fth-annual Elementary Triath- lon scheduled this Saturday, July 11 from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at the pool. Events include a swim in the pool, bike around the parking lot and up to a half-mile run for participants up to fi fth-grade level. Those interested can contact the pool at 541-942-5533 for more information, and parents must sign a waiver for their child to participate. Saturday, July 25 may be the busiest sin- gle day of the calendar year, with the annual Tri at the Grove triathlon beginning with the fi rst wave of sprint course participants at 8 a.m. at Cottage Grove Lake. Blair Bronson of Best in the West Events, which purchased the Tri from dark:30 Sports following the 2014 Tri, said registration numbers are “looking good” for this year’s event. Again this year, the Tri at the Grove will take place on the same day as the Down- town Chili Cook-off and Rock, Roll and Rumble car show, which starts at Cottage Grove High School, continues with a show- and-shine downtown from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. and a dance from 8:30-11:30 p.m. at the corner of Seventh and Main Streets. Concerts and Markets Cooler temperatures should bode well for Cottage Grove’s Concerts in the Park series, which continues this Wednesday (July 8) beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the “folk-fueled ‘fungrass’” of Gumbo Groove. Additional July dates are as follows: July 15 — Fret Boys, classic rock July 22 — Ian McFerron, Bob Dylan type “folky pop” July 29 — Flies with Honey, local origi- nal rock In addition to the concerts, Coast Fork Farm Stand is currently playing host to a farmers market that takes place each Wednesday from 3-6 p.m., and the Cottage Grove Public Market across the street fea- tures a fl ea market and fresh food offerings from 4-8 p.m. on concert days. The Cottage Grove Chamber of Commerce is also still seeking vendors to offer their wares in Bo- hemia Park during the concerts, and those interested are asked to contact Chamber Di- rector Travis Palmer at 541-942-2411. ll Blueberr e w s e i es r C 34030 Orchard Ave., Creswell 541-895-8907 Eugene Symphony The Eugene Symphony will be coming to Cottage Grove for a free concert on Mon- day, July 20 at 7 p.m. There will be food vendors in the park beginning at 5 p.m. to provide food for concert-goers.
