Ballew had a stroke of bad luck when, coming around the fi nal turn in contention for the lead, he hit a hurdle, got off stride and loped in fi fth. May 25 Harassment, Walmart The complainant, an employ- ee, requested an offi cer to con- tact her to discuss options on how to deal with her soon-to-be ex husband, who was parked in front of the store and harassing her. This week, the 10-inch meter developed a signifi cant leak on one of the welds. The Public Works utili- ties crew responded to the leak and the faulty weld was tapped and plugged. This quick repair seems to have solved the prob- lem for the moment. However, the meter will be monitored and if the leak reoc- curs, the 10-inch meter will need to be replaced at a cost of $3,770. Safe Drinking Water Act training On Friday of last week, Water Production Superintendent, Ray Pardee and Water Treatment Plant Operator Sam Haynes attended a one-day class in Beaverton on maintaining com- pliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act regulations. Specifi c topics dealt with total coli form rules, surface water treatment rules, disinfection byproducts rules, lead and copper rules, and microbial contaminants. Library receives Pilcrow Founda- tion Book Grant Children's Book Project grant. The Friends of the Cottage Grove Public Library will provide $400 in matching funds and the Pilcrow Foundation will double that and provide $800 toward book purchases. The result is $1200 for the purchase of children's books for the Cottage Grove Public Library. Guests can check out these new children's titles soon at the Cottage Grove Public Library. Free ukulele lessons Each Thursday at 9 a.m., the Cottage Grove Public Library hosts Nolene Wheeler, who leads and teaches ukulele to players of all levels of skill. For beginners, the Library has ukuleles that can be borrowed and even checked out from the Library. Ukulele for Kids begins on Tuesday, June 16 and will continue every Tuesday this summer at 9 a.m. Sing-Along at the Community Center The Cottage Grove Community Center will be hosting a “Sing- Along” Thursday, May 28 in the Reception Hall from 10:30- 11:30 a.m. Sing-Alongs will be held every other week through the summer. Pianist Doug Trap- pen will lead the group with songs from the 1880s through the 1980s with the last 15 min- utes dedicated to solos. The Cottage Grove Public Library has just been awarded a Pilcrow Foundation 2015 Waste roundup coming May 30 A household Hazardous Waste Roundup has been scheduled in Cottage Grove on Saturday, May 30 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at South Lane County Fire and Rescue, 233 Harrison Avenue in Cottage Grove. The collection is free for hazardous waste that is from household sources, up to 35 gallons total per customer. Haz- ardous waste from businesses, schools, churches or non-profi t organizations may be subject to disposal fees. What to bring: Paint, house- hold cleaners, lawn and garden chemicals, car care products, arts and crafts products, and other household hazardous waste. Please don't bring: Empty containers, drums, radioactive waste, asbestos or explosives. Businesses, non- profi t organizations, schools and churches that generate small amounts of hazardous waste may pre-register to bring that waste to this event. They must pay for disposal of the waste, but most can save money by using this program, rather than hiring a contractor on their own.
