CITY BEAT
Excerpts from the City's Friday Update publication
May 26, 1955
Cottage Grove High’s two-man thinclad
squad copped a tie for 13th spot at the Ore-
gon State High School Track and Field Meet
at Bell Field in Corvallis Saturday, as Jay
Wilson walked away with a blue ribbon in
his specialty pole vaulting event and Doug
Ballow garnered fi fth in the long hurdles.
Wilson won the event with a 12’ 6” ef-
fort. He missed the 12’ 10” mark on three
consecutive tries, although his fi rst miss was
greatly aided by a stiff wind which, after a
very slight jar, fi nally blew the bar off.
Ballew had a stroke of bad luck when,
coming around the fi nal turn in contention
for the lead, he hit a hurdle, got off stride
and loped in fi fth.

Kimwood Corporation, located
just south of Cottage Grove, is
served by a 16-inch water line
that runs down Highway 99
to Weyerhaeuser and supplies
water to a 10-inch meter for fi re
fl ow and a two-inch meter for
domestic service. This week,
the 10-inch meter developed a
signifi cant leak on one of the
welds. The Public Works utili-
ties crew responded to the leak
and the faulty weld was tapped
and plugged. This quick repair
seems to have solved the prob-
lem for the moment.
However, the meter will be
monitored and if the leak reoc-
curs, the 10-inch meter will
need to be replaced at a cost of
$3,770.
