Cottage Grove Retrospective A look back at Sentinel stories from 30 and 70 years ago Berlin fell yesterday after 12 days of bitter fi ghting. The battle of Berlin was described as one of the bloodiest struggles of the war. Joseph C. Grew, acting secretary of state, verifi ed reports that Heinrich Himmler had offered a German surrender, but the offer did not include Russia. The German and Italian Fascist armies in Northern Italy and in western Austria surrendered unconditionally yesterday. The number of men involved is said to have been nearly 1,000,000. Russian communities yesterday announced that Adolph Hit- ler committed suicide. Paul Joe Goebbels, propaganda minister, is also said to have taken his life. Previously the Nazi radio at Hamburg said Hitler died a hero’s death on May 1. The German Reich was split into three pockets yesterday by the British capture of Luebeck and the American junction with the Russians on the Elbe, 60 miles northwest of Berlin. This is where Himmler is reported to have unsuccessfully sued for peace. The fi rst act of the Fuehrer Adm. Farl Deonitz was to fi re Nazi veteran Joachim von Ribbenthrop as German foreign minister and name Count Ludwig Schwerin von Krosigk to replace him in apparent preparations for an early peace.
