Cottage Grove Retrospective
A look back at Sentinel stories from 30 and 70 years ago
Berlin fell yesterday after 12 days of bitter fi ghting. The battle
of Berlin was described as one of the bloodiest struggles of the
war.
Joseph C. Grew, acting secretary of state, verifi ed reports that
Heinrich Himmler had offered a German surrender, but the offer
did not include Russia.
The German and Italian Fascist armies in Northern Italy and
in western Austria surrendered unconditionally yesterday. The
number of men involved is said to have been nearly 1,000,000.
Russian communities yesterday announced that Adolph Hit-
ler committed suicide. Paul Joe Goebbels, propaganda minister,
is also said to have taken his life. Previously the Nazi radio at
Hamburg said Hitler died a hero’s death on May 1.
The German Reich was split into three pockets yesterday by
the British capture of Luebeck and the American junction with
the Russians on the Elbe, 60 miles northwest of Berlin. This
is where Himmler is reported to have unsuccessfully sued for
peace.
The fi rst act of the Fuehrer Adm. Farl Deonitz was to fi re Nazi
veteran Joachim von Ribbenthrop as German foreign minister
and name Count Ludwig Schwerin von Krosigk to replace him
in apparent preparations for an early peace.
Budget Committee Training
The City Manager and Finance Director met with fi ve
citizen members of the Budget Committee and introduced
them to the unique characteristics of municipal budgeting.
Committee members also took a short tour of city facilities
to familiarize them with city operations.
Yard of the Week
The 18th season of the Yard of the Week will be starting
on May 8. So be on the lookout for those members of the
community who deserve recognition for their efforts to
beautify the community. Single-family residences within
the City of Cottage Grove are eligible for the award. To
encourage more participation and recognize more homes
within the community, all recipients of the Yard of the
Week must wait two years before receiving the award
again. In addition to the attractive Yard of the Week sign
in their yard, the recipients of the award also receive a
credit for a free month of water from the City and a gift
certifi cate from the Chamber of Commerce good at local
businesses.

to join the Park Ambassadors, and it encourages those

sign up to be a part of the group’s inaugural season.

park and assist park users with information and can even
check-out recreational equipment for use in the park.
