Each interview took between fi ve to 10 minutes, and each community volunteer conducted about a half-dozen interviews, with volunteers rotating in and out throughout the morning. Marc Bass, who also over- sees the school’s branch of the Reaching Out Mentoring pro- gram, said the program to give sophomores a taste of the world of job interviews has been bring- ing students and business lead- ers together for about four years now. Bass said students look forward to (and often, dread) the interviews. He often chooses volunteers who have conducted interviews with students the pre- vious year, he said, to gauge the differences in their answers and performances from year to year. One such repeat volunteer, Brad Cohen of Brad’s Cottage Grove Chevrolet, said he’s nev- er been more impressed with the quality of interviews and inter- viewees than he was this year. DISTRICT BRIEFS KEZI weather team visits Bohemia and Harrison Last week, the Weather Team of KEZI News visited students at Bohemia and Harrison Elemen- tary School. Students learned about the science behind both the weather and predicting the weather. Abracadabra at LMS Lincoln Middle School held another Good Behavior Activity outh Lane School District and Head Start are inviting area parents to an evening of classes for parents of pre- school through elementary-age students. The Parents Connect event scheduled this Thursday, Jan. 29 beginning with a 6 p.m. dinner at Bohemia Elementary, offers parents a chance to attend one of a variety of presentations that suit their interests. The presentations and a brief description of each follow: 1. Get ready for full-day kindergarten Full Day Kindergarten is coming in the Fall of 2015. Dis- trict staff aims to work together to prepare children for success and joy in the rigorous expectations of Full-Day Kindergarten. Presented by SLSD Kindergarten Teachers Kristi Geisler (Bo- hemia) and Sarah Parsons (Harrison) for parents of 4-5 year olds. BY JON STINNETT The Cottage Grove Sentinel ophomores at Cottage Grove High School put their skills to the test Friday morning with a round of mock interviews conducted by mem- bers of the local business com- munity. Students left class and headed to the CGHS library in small groups Friday. There, they were assigned to a representative from a local business, government or nonprofi t organization. After the appropriate greeting, the student presented a resume outlining their skills and experience. A few of the typical questions that would be featured in most any job interview were then asked, and the volunteer used a score sheet to gauge the student in three areas — the greeting and handshake and whether the stu- dent was appropriately dressed for the interview; the substance of the interview and student's S on Jan. 6. In fact, this one was magical, as the school brought back Magician Hart Keene, who ate needles, pulled glasses out of empty bags and (miraculously) made Mr. Smith's head shrink! Students are eligible to attend good behavior activities if they don't have a referral or multiple detentions. At this event LMS had an amazing 92 percent of its students attend. OSLC, Dept. of Forestry donate technology desktop computers, several lap- tops and other devices to our district. These computers and devices have already started to make a difference around South Lane School District. A donated video processor replaced a failed unit at Bohemia Elementary, which re-enabled the closed cir- cuit cameras. The desktops have allowed the technology depart- ment to upgrade some class- room computers and the Harri- son mini-lab in the Library. One of the laptops replaced a teach- er's recently stolen one and also served as an upgrade. The tech- nology team will continue to put these resources to use over the school year. The Department of Forestry also recently donated 17 desk- top computers and fl at panel monitors. These computers will serve as upgrades to student lab computers. 4. Creating Personalized Behavior Supports for Your Child Learn how to develop personalized tools to help children be- come more independent in understanding and managing their own behavior. You will make and take supports during this ses- sion. Presented by Jen Burt, South Lane School District School Psychologist 5. Early Math Fun and Games Learn how you can support the development of your child’s math skills. Learn about a powerful digital game currently be- ing used to develop these skills. Targeting ages 4-7. Presented by U. of O. Researchers from the Center for Teaching and Learning 6. FUN With Books Learn how to make the most of reading with your child. Learn strategies to ask questions and extend a story through activities to increase vocabulary and comprehension. Presented by Gayla Clark, Emerald Reading Association 7. Managing YOUR Stress! Being a parent is the most diffi cult job in the world. There are many healthy strategies to manage your stress. Presented by Head Start’s Health and Wellness Specialist 8. Girls Can Be Bullies Too… The social interactions of girls can be complicated and trau- matizing. Learn strategies to help your daughter cope. Pre- sented by Staff from Ophelia’s Place 9.
