H . BUNCH. Elder. W hat the Hand Symbolizes Look where we will, wo find the hand in time and history, working, building, inventing, bringing civili zation out of barbarism. The hand symbolizes power and the excellence of work. The mechanic’s hand, that minister of elemental forces, the hand that hews, saws, cuts, builds, is useful in the world equally with the delicate hind that |uWntB a wild flower or molds a Grecian urn, or the hand of a -. u . k - ' that writes a law. the eye cannot say to ths hand, “ I have no need of thee.” Blessed be the hand! Thrice blessed be the bands that work!— From Helen Keller’s ‘‘A Chat About the Hand” in the Century. N ew s for Bald Headed Men. Washington, D. C., March 15.— Invention has found a substitute for human hair. It was discovered incidentally in n long quest for some method of tnakiDg artificial silk. After 150 years of failure, French and German chemists have solved the artificial silk problem. The department of commerce and labor has been informed that fac tories will soon be started in the United States for making silk col lodion. The same .uctoriea will make hair for wigs. In the umttor of hair for the head, nature has not been able to keep up with art. The collodion- spun hair is lighter, softer, cheaper and altogether better hair thau is cropped from the human head. Inventors of the artificial silk process are Profs. Lehuer < f A u g s burg and Count Hilairede Cliar- dennell of Paris. Two factories aro running in Germany, two in Switzerland and one in France. One of the Germnny factories sold the United States $135,315 product last year. Cellulose is the basis of the arti ficial silk, and this is obtained generally from carded cotton, al though also obtained from corn and other grains. -------- - » - # » .. The Capital City lias again re sumed its normal level. Soldiers, regular and irregular, infantry, cav alry and artillery, correct cadets from West Point and Annapolis and incorrect cowboys from Heaven knows where, have folded their suit cases and bronchos aud gone. The White House and Semite re main and are now having it out over the Dominican protocol. ’ The Sen ate expects to allow itself ton days cogitation before voting. The ques tion is doubtless of very grou1 im portance as a precedent and is earnestly watched by Y'enczuela and the South American republics with intense interest. There was mean ing in tbs President’s Inaugural speech when he said, ' “Never before have men tried so vast and formid able an experiment ns that of ad ministering a continent under the forma o f a democratic republic." . _ - ItEtiT— A good house and several nice garden lots Apply at Uue office.
