HOLD YOUR PORK.
The COQUILLE CO-OPERA­
TIVE PACKING COMPANY’Sman-
Hger desires all growers o f pork to
hold back their pork from sale un­
til they hare heard of his proposi­
tion. This company will be pre­
pared to handle the entire pork
crop by the time the corn-fed pigs
come into season. The company
proposes to pay hog growers the
prevailing prices for their live
weight, and th«n to equally share
with them the profits which results
from the sale of the manufactured
article.
The same arrangement
will bo given to beef and poultry
raisers.
This packing company is going
into the shipment of dressed poul­
try and beef for the San Francisco
market.
The company has ar­
ranged to have cold storage placed
t n one of the steamers for this fea­
ture of its shipping business, so
that meats may be dressed here,
and arrive in San Francisco in the
v e r y best of condition, only three
days from the day of slaughter.
It is the purpose of the manager
to introduce the manufacture of
preserved edibles from the several
products ns they come in season
throughout the year; peas, string
beans, jams and jellies from berries,
preserved plums, dried and evapo­
rated apples, starch, salmon, pork,
the shipment of Steel-head salmon,
and son forth. The same arrange­
ment will be given to producers of
all kinds of edibles as are offered
on meat, namely, that the prevailing
price will pe paid them for the raw
1 roducr, and then the profit which
is realized from the sale of the man­
ufactured article will be equally
divided between the producer and
the corporation.“
A provision in the articles of in­
corporation of this company forever
secures for the producer this share
in the profits of the manufactured
article.
The producer, being a stockhold­
er in the corporation, will realize
nlso a profit fr o m the earnings of
the corporation, according to the
amount of stock which he holds.
It will only share its profits with
producers who have stock in the
company.
This company will have its agents
in Nan Francisoo to sell goods as
as fast us they are contracted for at
this point.
The San Franoisco
agent will no doubt be ono of the
Coquille townsmen, so that the
company’s shipments and business
will be in the hands of a person
who is well known to the Coquille
people.
The Century Mercantile
Company of San Francisoo, through
whose instrumentality this company
is being organized, will offer its o f­
fice and business connections to the
packi ng company, in the mere hope
of becoming established as a reli­
able channel through which the
company’s products
may
be
marketed. The connection is not
in any way binding on the Packing
Company. In fact, it will not have
anything to do with the Packing
company unless the Directors so
desire.
The Coquille country is more fa­
vorably situated for a general pack­
ing business than any other near-by
location. Its products sre not only
varied, but the vanety is produced
by each settler. Each family pro­
duces pork, apples, peas, butter and
Hulmon.
A packing company could
run throughout the year with these
varied manufactures, and many per­
sons employed the year round.
Such a varied manufacture will
mako Coquille the industrial cen­
ter of the Coquille river.

We take the following from the
Portland Daily Journal of the 20th:
A busineus man of Coquille, Or.,
who is in Portland on a brief visit,
stated this morning that his com­
munity was keenly interested in the
oil developments at Bandon, down
along the Coos coast It has been
generally known for some time that
a well was being bored on the shore
near Bandon, but the favorable
results
being attained at a
depth of 1,000 to 1,100 feet are
quite recent public knowledge. The
result has been to cause the com­
munity to follow the drill closely as
the management will permit news to
get aboard.
Two strata of oil-bearing sand
have been penetrated, and there has
been an exceptionally strong blast
of natural gas for some time. The
pressure from gas interfered so ma­
terially with the work that the chan,
nel admitting it had to be cased in
three places. Everything points to
a good oil district, and the anticline
formation has been sufficiently test­
ed to satisfy the oil operators that
oil and gas would be confined at
deep levels in tho proper basins,
permitting commercial work.

ing.
The first Mothers’ and Teachers'
meeting of the year was held Fri.

The main business on hand was
the election of officers for the ensu­
ing year, the officers elected being
as follows: President, Mrs. W. C.
Chase; First Vice-President, Miss
Grace Bridges; Second Vice-Presi­
dent, Mrs. J. J. Handsaker; Third
Vice-President, Miss Inez Lusk;
Secretary, Mrs. A. N. Gould; Treas­
ure, Mrs. A. A. Leach. Mrs. Sper­
ry and Mrs. Yoakum were elected
members of the executive committee.
Prof. Davis, as chairman of the
program oommittee, announced that
the topic for discussion at the next
meeting would be, “ Some Essen­
tials of a Successful School.” This
topic will be divided into four parts,
as follows: the directors’ part; the
parents’ part; the teachers’ part and
the pupils' part.
Two of these
Bub-heads will be considered noxt
time.
The next meeting will occur Nov.
18. It is hoped there will be a full
attendance.
Riverton P ick-ups.
D. Rouse has let contracts for
driving, gang ways, chutes, and al­
so for sinking the slope, lie will
soon be in position to plaee several
men on the breasts. The contract
work is being pushed to its utmost.
They are now working three shifts
of eight hours each, and will soon
be turning out lots of coal.
Louis Vandenburg is now a con­
tractor in the coal mine here.
Mr. Chris Terres, of Coquille, is
now engaged at the coal mine.
Messrs. Mathew, Laws and Cau-
set, of Beaver Hill, are employed in
the Rouse coal mine. Mr. Causel
has rented the Ida Nosier house aud
Mr. Laws the D. J. Lowe house.
They will bring their families here
next week.

cellor Day, of Syracuse University,
has declared in an address to the
students that dancing must cease.
The chancellor so decided because
of the dances given by an organi­
zation of college women who have
been holding weekly parties at the
Westminister Hall. Dr. Day said:
“Those dances militate against
scholarship and study.
Any at­
tempt to hold a dance aftor this
will be taken as a deliberate notice
of your intention to be no longer
one of us.”
The chancellor’s ultimatum has
caused consternation among the
students.

Christian Church Notes.
The revival did not close Sunday
night as was expected. On account
of the deep interest shown by the
seven conversions in the one even­
ing, the church and Mr. Bower
thought it unwise to close. As Mr.
Bower can preach until Wednesday
night and then reach Albany in
time for Sunday, the meetings will
continue at least until that time.
