It bus a num ber of braucues spreading out widely and carrying leaves of a yellowish green color. - The wood Is extremely Que and easily worked In a green state. It is not given to either warping or splitting. The most remarkable thing about it Is that after beiug cut the wood gets gradually harder and in the course of a few years it Is absolutely petrltied, whether left in the open air or burled In the ground. - From this timber bouses can be built tuut would In a few years become completely fire proof and would last as long as though built of stoue.' Hides for tanneries and for shoo manufactories are grown here, and Enterprise and the people of Wallowa, need the tan neries and manufactories. Scores of other manufacturing plants of va rying nature would find In Enterprise just the location their stocUligMers are looking for, and we would' el come all growth and incoming in terests. The. Of their in dustry, ,wlde-awake qualities, gene rosity, sympathy, and all that makes up tho beet of humanity anywnere too much can not be claimed for the people of Wallowa. la Enterprise we have this clasa of people. They extend what ia called the "giaa hand" to every hard-working, hon able roapective resident. "The set tler coming here 'will find this char acteristic a marked one on the part of those with whom he comes In contact, Foe a. long time thie people of Wal Iowa county lived In the interior, off anv railroad. Every pound of freight was hauled In from the out aide by ''wagon freighters. It re quired two days' journey. by stag to reach the county esa,t from the outside world. Settlers, for many years, battled with Indians, and were daily Jeopardy of their lives. All homesteaders early learned the les son of flying to each other's need Sympathies were quickened by the very geographical inconveniences and hv thin w1t nkineer hardships, so ciety, fortunately, lost the frivolous conventionalities ; In the more inv portant realities of the day. Forced to get right down to the earth and to found the busln'ass empire ofl Wal lowa county upon what are called "hard licks ," the people developed the aturdiaesa of character which ia capable of standing alone and working out a destiny anywhere un der the great bending sky Into the midst of Just such people Ihe man and woman of the east will come. If he or sha cornea to En terprlse or to any poiatt In Wallowa county. And it is like getting into a big family, where everybody seems to be deeply concerned with me .welfare of everybody. else, to locate in Wallowa. To crown all this, the peoDle of Wallowa, under early hard ships, kept lace with the wona. built their schoolhouses and cburcnes, established their libraries, subscribed to their daily and weekly news papers,, and marched along fci the van of events. Such people have culture as well as eturdy initiative and adaDtabilitr: they have deep sensibilities as well as the brawn required to lift up public enterprises Into concrete realization; and they have reflection, as well a eager "push and "go." With due consideration for the ! people of every other locality to Or- egon and tbw northwest, the stranger in Enterprise and Wallowa county will be Impressed that no grander lives ever were devoted to empire building than those that have con gregated within the limits of this county. Jim Hill of the Great North ern would delight bis heart' among the people of Wallowa. He la no ted as atr empire builder, a develop er of towns and cities and lands, a When the world 1 clamoring for bread and offeiing a dollar a bush el for wheat, the Wallowa county farmer is smiling at hl thousands of acres of wheat which will yield him firom 30 to 40 buehela per acre. While the market for vegetable and fruits la rapidly Increasing, the veg etable and fruit grower of Wallowa county is merrily pruning his tree uid shrubbery, and preparing for the rop that is a sure winner' aud sure bank account for hUn and his family. In WallQwa county, In many places, the farmer can irrigate or lot, Just as he needs It, or does not ieed It. In many other places Irri gation is not yet practiced, because he localities are nw; still wheat is grown without irrigation, and it la the best wheat raised In, Oregon. The coming settler must, of course, know that Wallo.wa. county la a new er section than any . county in New fork, Ohio, or any of the eastern or middle stattea. Necessarily there Is hard work In store for any settler. But it Is no harder than lies In 3tare for a successful man anywhere else, and not half as hard as that which the settler leaves to come here. Moreover, there is certainty of increased value of lands, certainty of all crops, certainty of market, and certainty of good prices for whatever the settler wishes to raise. If' you are a grain farmer, come to Wallowa we have some of the best small grain land and climate ow earth here. If you are a truck gardener, come to Waltowa county we have jome of the best vegetable land ind climate in the world If you re a fruit raiser, come to Wallowa we have locations, still crying for settlement, where the finest peaches, pears, apples, plums, prunes and the like can be raised, of any in the Northwest. The name of Wallo.wa spells success and prosperity fo,- ev ery man, and woman who will come here with a little money and go right to work.
