MEMBERS OF THE SAME FAMILY. IT TEACHES ME

ER OF CHARITY, and charity is the guardian of civilty and good
breeding, and good breeding is ono of the essential elements of the
well being of society. Worldly politeness devoid of religion is cold,
formal and heartless. It soon degenerates into hollow ceremony.
Good breeding, inspired by religion and charity, inculcates a constant
SELF DENIAL. It is SINCERE AND UNAFFECTED, it has
the ring of the genuine coin, it passes current everywhere, and it is
easily distinguished from the counterfeit.
The CHRISTIAN RELIGION IS ALL' PERVADING. It
influences the master and the servant, the rich and the poor. It AD
MONISHES THE MASTER TO EE KIND and humane toward
bis servant by reminding him that lie also has a master in heaven who
bas no respect to persons. It ADMONISHES THE SERVANT
TO BE DOCILE AND OBEDIENT to his master, "not serving
to the eye as it were pleasing men, but, a3 the servant of Christ, doing
the will of God from the heart."
It charges the rich not to be high minded NOR TO TRUST IN
UNCERTAIN RICHES, but in the living God, who "giveth us
abundantly all things to enjoy." It counsels the poor to BEAR
THEIR PRIVATIONS WITH RESIGNATION by setting before
them the life of him who, in the words of the apostle, "being rich, be
came poor for your sake, that, through his poverty, you might bo
rich."

ENDURING) THAN GOVERNMENTS. IT IS THE FOCUS OF ALL 80
CIAL VIRTUES, THE BASIS OF PUBLIC MORALS, THE MOST POW
ERFUL INSTRUMENT IN THE HANDS OF LEGISLATORS. IT 13
STRONGER THAN SELF INTEREST, MORE AWE INSPIRING THAN
CIVIL THREATS, MORE UNIVERSAL THAN HONOR, MORE ACTIVE

Directly south from the canal is a coast line of five thousand miles,
Teaching from Panama to Patagonia, upon which practically debouch
Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Chile, all countries of vast
potentialities and conducting now in their isolated location an annual
foreign commerce valued at three hundred million dollars.
The canal, opened, will MAKE THIS GROW IN TEN
YEARS TO ONE BILLION DOLLARS, OR TWICE THE
COST OF THE CANAL Northwest from the canal, or from Pan
ama to San Diego, is another const lino of three thousand miles upon
which debouch tho five Central American republics and Mexico and a
foreign trade worth now one hundred million dollars. Thero are,
then, in short, eight thousand miles of resourceful coast line now
doing against heavy odds a foreign trado of four hundred million dol
lar and representing twelve different countries which WILL SUD
DENLY BE PLACED INTO CLOSE PROXIMITY WITH THE
UNITED STATES WHEN THE CANAL IS COMPLETED,
only five; yeara from now. Certainly the United States must begin to
