Now that there are many parties fishing on Wallowa river, and on the Mlnam, it is Interesting to note that the word "Wallowa"' means "fish trap" in the Indian tongue, says the La Grande Star. Years ago, during the time of the Josephs In Wallowa county, t!je Indians were accustomed to catching many fishes in Wallowa river with traps. These traps were left from one season to Uie next on the banks of the river, and tlie o'd timers say that theae traps looked like crosses standing out in the distance. The present spelling of the word "Wallowa" was adopted In 1866. A party of surveyors under William H. 0Doll, afterwards surveyor gen eral of Oregon, had set out from where Elgin is now built to Sur vey the Snake river. However, on account of the hostile Indications of Uie Indiana they got as far only as "Cliff. River.' now known as Big Sheep. At one time the surveying required that they place a stake in the center of a, brave's tent near the present town of Wallowa. This caused much anger, and threaten- Ing3 among the Indians, vegetables that wa? ever hauled up Trail creek, consisting of 1C1 boxes of tomatoes, pears and ground cherries The load welgheJ over 3500 pounds and was pulled by a four horse team.
