YEARS AGO.
Now that there are many parties
fishing on Wallowa river, and on the
Mlnam, it is Interesting to note that
the word "Wallowa"' means "fish
trap" in the Indian tongue, says
the La Grande Star. Years ago,
during the time of the Josephs
In Wallowa county, t!je Indians were
accustomed to catching many fishes
in Wallowa river with traps. These
traps were left from one season to
Uie next on the banks of the river,
and tlie o'd timers say that theae
traps looked like crosses standing
out in the distance.
The present spelling of the word
"Wallowa" was adopted In 1866.
A party of surveyors under William
H. 0Doll, afterwards surveyor gen
eral of Oregon, had set out from
where Elgin is now built to Sur
vey the Snake river. However, on
account of the hostile Indications of
Uie Indiana they got as far only as
"Cliff. River.' now known as Big
Sheep. At one time the surveying
required that they place a stake in
the center of a, brave's tent near the
present town of Wallowa. This
caused much anger, and threaten-
Ing3 among the Indians,

Chandler shipped another car of
cattle from Enterprise, Monday,
bought from Hotchklss, Will Zurcher
and others. In the bunch were three
steers Zurcher let him have to fill

4400 pounds and brought an averag3
of $56.32 a head.

A dispatch in Saturday's Portland
Journal from Armitage, Mont., staled
that a saloonkeeper was fatally stabb
ad that day by S. B. Oaskill, another
laloonkeeper. The victim had re

The Enterprise second baseball
