One such substl tute onslsts of cheese and macaron. croquettes: "Break the macaroni In half-tncr pieces ; there should be two-thirds o: a cupful. Cook In boiling saltec water until soft, drain In a colander. and pour over two cupfuls of cold water, to prevent pieces from adher ing. Add thick white sauce made o two and one-half tablespoonfuls o butter, one-third cupful of flour, ont cupful of milk, one-fourth of a tea spoonful of salt and a few grains o pepper; then add one-third of a cup ul of grated cheese. Spread on t plate to cool. Shape, dip in crumbs egg, and crumbs again, fry in deei fat, and drain on brown paper." Doubly Useful Mucilage. Baker ordered a carload o machinery this week which will be shipped to Wallowa. This looks as though the railroad would soon be in to the valley. Earl and Otha Botts, Claud Myers and Arden Mench departed for the Washington harvest fields, Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Hulse, Mr. and Mrs. Lon Hulse, Mlna Hulse, Frank Wllsey and Serenu3 Blanchard Btart ed for Pomeroy the last of the week to work during harvest. The doc tor will build on his vacant property across the street from the Farmers hotel. Paul Moore's father and mother of Waitsburg, Wash., are here for a visit with their son and family. The hall storm In' the spring destroyed the eggs. Huckleberries are also very scarce In fact there are none at all neat here. I guess there are a few lowet down, near the river. Two gentlemen, from Pendleton were over on a hunting and fishing tour. They went over on Mud Creek west of Sled Springs, and got aboul 200 nice trout. D. A. Wood of D. A.
