An electric would do be just what we desire, and it would L'et truffin tko ITInn Jnnm.l . That is what this great county has needed for many years a rail road. It certainly looks now as if this reed would be partially satis fied this summer, by the completion of the Elgin-Joseph extension of ineu. ac in. in an mtetview at Portland Friday, General Mana ger O'Brien, who had returned from a trip over the lines, said work had been resumed on all new construction except the Joseph extension and he was expecting oidors within a few days to begin that. The completion of the O. R, & N. to Joseph will' but emphasize the need of the not th end for a railroad, as stated by the Journal. And it is not stretching the truth to say that need will be satisfied within a very few years at least. A resume of the present situation gives assurance of that. In the first place thre are the rumors of electric lines from Walla Walla or Lcwiston or both. Tie Oregon and Washington Traction company at the f irini r city, ,,no'(.f whose announced purposes was to build a line into Wallowa count I, has recently merged with the Col umbia & Waiht Walla which hm v.duablo rights aud franchises' and proposes to build from Daytou .! to Wallula. The merger makes a strong company, and while its real plans are kept secret, it is known that, Btirveys have been made, presumably by this company, over the Blue Mountains, down the Wenahii to its mouth and down the Grande Runde to LewiBton. These surveys are also alleged to have been made in the interest of the Pacific coast extension of the; Chicago & Northwestern. th mw.t-r. ious North Coast. At first thoueht this seems M. undertaking, but that is principally due to its unfamiliarity. Communities no more thickly populated and with not near the natural resources of this have built such roads. ! Read the story of how Dufur and Condon sot their railroads Ti, in; Hvii vm; uvi a m an electrio road 28 miles long being built principally by the farmers who live within 10 miles of the route. They argued the road would increase the value of their land from $10 to $23 au acre, besides the increased value of their crops. There is onlvone town r.n th i?n larger than Enterprise and it has less i.uy iook biock, iroin 9 iw to fouuu worth, just they were able. Those who had no money paid with material or laW. There is little doubt the O. R. & N wtwiW give assistance to such a feeder just as it did to the Condon and Dulur projects. The O R & N. wants the tonnae from tho North CountrV.
