W'ECIAICOUSTV ADVEKTIHINQ OFFEB Editorial THURSDAY, Washington and Lincoln. February nan the honor of being the birth month of the two great est men that America bun produced and two of the greatest in all the files of titn. Washington and Lincoln! What one couritry can point to two names in its history that rank with America's immortals? All the world l.ai conceded Washington's place, and all the world, except n few small -bores here in the United States, concede that in equipment both of mind and heart Abraham Lincoln ia the peer of any man in all the annals of history. A s imple of the small-liores is a fellow named Lovell, of Pendleton, who made an address in Portland on Lincoln's birthday r d eaid in substance that he whom J.tmes Russell Lowell called "'the first and greatest American," wa6 not a stat sman, nor a lawgiver, nor an orator, nor a publicist, n r a soldier of the first rank! He ;ve Lincoln credit Of being unrivalled an a ''humanitarian" and that whs all. The Pendleton.man has rend history to little purpose. or else has not read it at all. The renins that detected and corrected Seward's mis tikes, and unerringly pointed out the true course amid the shoals of European hostility, not a great statesman? Th genius that drew and promulgated at just the right time the moat momentous act since the adoption of the constitution, not a great law-giver? The genius that gave forth the Gettysburg address and the Seor.nd Inauvural, not a great orator? The genius who spake the words that formed the rallying point for the growth of the Republican party, not a great publicist? The genius whose "suggestions" for military movements, when followed, always brought victory, and disaster always followed when disregarded; tie civic commander in-chief of all the armies of the Union, of, whom it was said by a great critic, "He was a greater strategist than any of his generals," not a great soldier? And such is fame in one's own country where Lo veils abound. Next year is the centenary of Lincoln's birth. The News Record believes a national celebration should be held, and would like to see Oregon lead the movement.. One of the unpleasant surprises of the beginning of the campaign is the Oregonian jo: ing ha nils with the forces of reaction Hnd political corfuptionists in seeking to overthrow -tne election of United States senators by the people and a return to the old bargain and sale way. Thecomtitution of the United S ates prescribes that the president shall be elected by electors chosen by the people. In reality people vote directly for president; the electors are mere nonenities, pieces of machinery to carry out the will of the people of their state. As far as the election of United States senator is concerned, members of the'legis lature should resemble presidential electors and simply carry , out the will of the people. Statement No. 1 accomplishes this and the people will see that only St itenent No. 1 candidates for the legislature are elected. Everyone Can Help. Dnring the four months last yeur that the colonist rates were in effect 27,215 people came to Oregon from the East, or 227 people for every day of the 120 days. This was achieved, says the Portland Com mercial club, by direct adver ising sending local papers, letters and descriptive pamphlets to ' f rends. The colonists rates go into effect again on March 1. If between now and then every citizen of Wallowa county will send one of the descriptive slips to a friend in the East many settlers will be induced to come. The? cost is practically nothing, A one cent stamp will send the slip, and you mn procure the slips free from any of the following, or they will gladly nmil the slips if you will send the addresses : O. Walok, Joseph. ; The News Record, Enterprise. Hustle vs. Patience. The people of Asotin county are in downright ear net t about a railroad Into the interior of the county. A promotor named McKean has secured thous ands of dollura in stock subscriptions, to be paid in cash, material, labor or right of way, from the land owners and other residents of the Cloverland and Anatone districts. Tho representative men of the towns ot Asotin, Clarkston and Lewis ton have guaranteed (300,000 to the first railroad connecting those towns with Cloverland and Anatone. " Strange to say that the news of the meeting that guaranteed this fund had hardly reached KeYork before the order for resumption of work on the O. R. & N. line from Rlpsria to Lewiston was Issued ! Our neighbors on the north know how to prick the construction depart ment of the O. R. & S. into activity. All things come to them who hustle while they wait. ' s SEARS & ROEBUCK IHOICTEP, .The Boot and Shoe Recorder in a recent issue contf ins the follow itic: Regular retail dealers who complain of tl.e competition of the bi mail order concerns, base their complaints mostly on the nnfair and misleading description of the goods offered in the bulky cata logues sent out. That thore is reason for these complaints is evidenced by the fact that an indictment was re turned by the United States district court for the southern dintrict of Iowa, against the firm of Sears, Roebuck & Co., of Chicago, charging fraudule:.t use of the mail for misrepresenting the character of the goods sold and for warded by mail, and obtaining money under false pretense. The action of the grand jury is the result of the activities of W. J. Pilking ton, editor of the "Merchants' Trade Journal'. of Des Moines, la., who for more than two years has been at work publicly and through the columns of his journal in au effort to prove that this inncern has been, and is now, violating the laws of the country with renpect to the manner of securing trade, Tho indictment sets forth in detail three counts, one of which was for the i-ale of paint which the concern stated in a certain letter contained white lead and was mu!e in their own great paint factory under the supervision of the finest of pnlnt experts. The evidence showed that the concern did not operate a paint factory of its own, and that the paint in question (which was Boot by mail did uot contain white lead. The second count referred to a ring advertisement-by specific number in the catalogue which was described and illu.-itra.ted as containing four pearls and four Kupphires, when as the ring as sent by mail did not contain any pearl or any sapphin s and was of generally inferior quality. i ne third count also refers to a ring ilhistratid and described as containing 12 pearls and two i ubies. ', The Sears, Roebuck & Co. concern have directed a great business, ' and report sales In 1900, all by mail orders, to the amount of $53,000,000, no sales being made in the city of Chicago. They print and mail a 1.300 nao-e cata logue, and deal directly with consumers living in agricultural and remote set' tions, celling all sorts of m rohardise There U no doubt that they will make a strong defense ard will depend on their resources to w ear out I lie pros ecution.
