'"l'l'thy, it either personal or party our columns are too full of paid ad vertising to justify it. Nor do we expect to use any of it. Our past observations are against the expediency of it. This applies to politicians and parties of every kit and kind. Our ad vertising columns i re open to all ot them on exactly the same terms the regular advertising rate but absolutely not open to any personal or party political prop aganda. This applies to state unit local as well as national individ ual and "party propagandists. Thousands upon thousands ol dollars are expended in every po litical campaign. The men who send out the free press notices to the publishers draw fat salaries for doing so. Thousands of dol lars are spent for publicity. The presB agents are paid; the postage is paid; the composition Is paid for; Ilia photographs and plates are paid for; the motion pictures xre paid for. Why should not the ublisher get paid for his more valuable commodity? This has been our experience. Politicians will use I he newspa pers just as long 'is they are use ful and always when they can be Used for nothing. Once elected, il the paper criticN'g too harshly we hear talk of a censorship. If the publisher cries for bread they hand him a stone. If he wants relief from the outrageous print paper situation thev give him con versation: if he wants an honest postal rate he run? up against a "souk the newspaper guy." Just at present all the rondi dales are in l ie attitude of bow ing and scraping to newspaper publishers wheresoever siluaied They need tie newspapers now and consequently they are e.x tiemely polite to them. Once elected, they won't need the news papers at all, at least they figure they don't n 1 them, unil then Ihe country publisher will not be able to get wit lin hailing distance of the back door of the third as sistant secretary to the official. Koehler evidently Just as certainly as small invest-j knew what the reports of the nients, and, besides, we live in an church and various societies were age of big things ai d to do them greatly costs a deal of money. The second is a baser kind and needs no sympathy or tolerance. What ho does he does because he is short visioned not only but stingy. He is ready to break his neck any day to obstruct a move ment if he thinks it will cost him a dollar. He knows if the thing (..oes he will be embarrassed by be ing asked to contribute; that he will be In a bad light If he re fuses; and he fights the move ment simply because ho desires to shirk his responsibility. Usual ly he is the most active in ubstruc tive movements. Of his type up those who make real estate In vestments, never make a dollar of improvement .4, dodge every fi nancial demand intended to make more value, and sils quietly by In the hope of profiting by the pub lic spirit and enterprise of- his neighbor, llo never opposes any thing except that which is likely to cost hi in an additional dollar, but the moment a proposition conies up that he will be unable to dodge without embarrassment lie rolls up his sleeves and be gins to fight like a soii-of-a-giiu to down it. According to his ac count everybody who favors the movement Is a "grafter." To make his argument appear strong er he admits a need along the line, hut says thai it should be done in an entirely different way. The wrong men are at the head of it Ihe city is too small to stand the strain the tjiing is all right, but its cost will bankrupt tho town and so he rambles on with plausible argument until the movement is defeated. Then he forgets that he raid be thoui-.nt it should be put forward in a modified or different form, hi going to show when, instead of a formal grace before eating, he called on the assembly to sing, "Praise God Prom Whom All Blessings Flow," and Ibis was cer tainly done with hearty good will.
