Two accidents occurred on the, steamer Columbia Monday night after she docked at the Flavel coal bunkers. As the 'lont horemect ere about to put cool on board one of them fell off the ship Into the riv r. He was hauled out and was found to bar received a slight cut on the head. Another fell from the 'twcn decks lnu the cool bunkers. He was rendered un conscious by the fall, but was not badly Injured otherarUe. An afternoon paper yesterday published a statement to the effect that tho Pro gressive Commercial Association consid ered a flouring mill proposition at Its meetlns; Monday night, and that M. J. Kinney and M- Nowlen had offered a site at the corner of Sixth and Astor streets. Mr. Kinney waa seen regarding the matter last night and expreeeed nur prtse that negc.iat.ona were on foot fur the construction of the mill. He aald that, while he would like to see a flour ing mill in Astoria, he knew nothing hatever of the reported negotiations. It Is reported that ei-Clty Surveyor Holkm&nn. who was removed from office for malfeaiince by the council Monday night, will appeal the case to the rourts. The ground on which the appeal is to be taken Is not stAted. It Is evident, how. ever, tha Mr. Heikmann has good reas on to believe that a court of Uw al.l reverse the decision of the council, as ho rtild nbt.uIutily no attention to the iirj. ceedlng-s against him by the municipal body. He was notified wnen the trial was to take place, but appeared neither In person nor by attorney. . The British ship Cape Cleur, wheat laden, finished loading at Portland yes terday, and Is drawl nsr 22 feet t Inches. The steamer Burma, which arrived from Portland Monday, waa drawing 22 feet ( Inches and waa three and a half days on the passage. The Cap Clear will probably have to lighter about 1000 tone of wheat before she can reach Astoria, the Burma being compelled to lighter WO or 500 tons, although drawing two Inches less than the Cape Clear. As It is less difficult to keep a steamer In the channel than a ship, the Cape Clear may be looked for to arrive here about the first of next week. The Austrian steamer Burma was over hauled yesterday by a diver for the pur pose of ascertaining whether or not she sustained any damage by lylna; aground on the shoal on the way down from Portland. The diver made hla descent from the steamer O. K., which laid along side the Burma and on which the diving apparatus waa placed. The vessel was thoroughly overhi'Jlcd, but she. was found to be In perfect condition and there was i.o cause for alarm. Captain Mlkul! l "i feared the Burma was strained, the tide hn vl'" fallen from the at-eamer about two feet when she grounded near Gome, fir tnnmelv ithH laid on a soft, muddy lot- torn and rutaln"d no damages. Tlio Burma leaves for the Orient today. The a tlon of the council In ordering the Imurovtment of Astor street- will be hailed with dellf?ht by taxpayers owning property there. The street Is to be Im proved between Sixth and Ninth streets, in which portion Is Included the Bowery. There are many saloons along the thor oughfare, all of which pay tti a year license, and the owners think the street should at least be made passable. The street I now In a terrible condition, and t,o. hrt fur some three or four years past. H. B. Parker and M. Nowlen re monstrated egulnst the Improvement, but the council filed the remonstrances and ordered the Improvement. Work will be Kln immediately and must be nnhhed within 60 days. Blda will be advertised for in a few day and the contract awarded. The Astorlan ha received the following letter from Walter J. Honeyman. of the llrm of Honeyman Sc. It Is apparent from Mr. Honeyman' letter, which la cheerfully published, that the '-tm-e of a combination among twine manufacturer must be conceded, con trary to dtvthvls published here and else, where. John Fernleaf. a H-y.-nr-old lad. arrived at New Tork from Uverpool tbe other d ty and told a story that suggeats s il! retrard for truth. The loy says he lived near Dayton. Wash., and that his parents left their home last May to stake out a cUlm on an Indian reservation. He was U-ft alone, he says, and, feeling lonesome, went to Portland to look for a brother there. Ho failed to find hi brother and wandere-1 almletmly about the metropoll". Finally he waa approached by some sail ors, to whom he communicated hU troubles, and they told bin they would provide him with lodgtrafs. He was taken abcard the llrrtUh bark Crmptnn and soon was sound anlrep. Whrn he awoke the vec4 waa skimming over the blllna-y deep, and the captain refused to take him back to port. Th ship was bovnd for Cardiff, Wal ta, which prt wis reached In five months. From Carl ff he went to IJvi'tooI and then to New Y'irk. arriving with but 6 oe.it In his pocket. Johnnie's story Is probably a fabrication. If he went to sleep when the Crompton was In Portland and did not awake until the vessel was far out to sea, ho Indeed must be a wonderful lad. An ordinary boy. even from Washington, would starve to death In the time required for a ship to come from Portland to the si. Slaylx Johnnie was In a trance and didn't know It U.txI.OO) LOST ON HORSE RA.'Et). It is slated that a man won and lost IV'Q.OoO on horse raota.
